Title: CANADA

1
CANADA
  • Summer 2007

2
(No Transcript)
3
When?
  • Summer Term ends on Friday 22nd June
  • Proposed outbound flight on Wednesday 27th June

How long for?
  • Between three and four weeks
  • Depends on individuals who want to come
  • Proposed return flight on Wednesday 25th July
gives us 28 days in Canada

4
The basic plan
  • Fly into Calgary
  • Start in Banff
  • Work way North-west wards up through Banff and
    Jasper National Parks
  • Fly back from Calgary

5
What we will be doing
  • Walking in the beautiful mountains
  • Day walks and longer walks between backcountry
    campsites
  • Highest peak Mount Robson 3954m (12,972 ft) in
the far North of Jasper National Park
  • The highest areas will have a substantial amount
of snow on the tops, possibility of doing some
    easy alpine routes
  • Scrambling, huge range of grades and lengths
    available
  • Rock climbing, sport and trad, as well as
    bouldering
  • Anything else people want, horse riding, mountain
    biking, white-water rafting, kayaking etc.

6
  • There is no fixed plan
  • What happens depends on the people going and what
we find when we get out there
  • Flexibility is the key!
  • Possibility of visiting Neil in Vancouver for
    some culture.

7
Flights
  • www.flyzoom.com, cheap and cheerful!
  • Fly direct from London Gatwick to Calgary
  • Flight time 9 hours 30 mins approx.
  • Flights are on a Wednesday
  • Up to individual to book own flights

8
Hire cars
  • We will need to hire cars as Canada is soo huge
you cannot get around easily on public transport
  • With 4 people to a smallish car we can minimise
the costs as much as possible
  • Fuel is cheap compared to this country at the
    moment, 45ppL
  • They will also allow us to get food shopping
easily and reach the more remote areas of the
    National Parks

9
Accomodation
  • We will be camping for pretty much all of the
    time
  • There are literally thousands of campgrounds in
    the national parks
  • Operate on a first come first served basis
  • You need a pass for backcountry camping
  • An annual pass valid in all national parks is
worthwhile if wild camping for more than 7 nights

10
The business
  • The trip will not be cheap.
  • Canada is a long way away and flights will cost
    about 500
  • We need to hire cars and for 28 days this should
cost about 35 per person per week, based on 4
    sharing
  • Fuel is cheap, but the distances we will cover
    are large
  • Camping will help to keep costs down
  • Passes are required for entrance into the parks,
but annual ones work out quite cheap at 30
  • The cost of food is about the same as this
    country

11
Costs per person
  • Transport to London Gatwick and back from Bristol
    50 approx
  • Return Flights to Calgary 500, depends on exact
    flights
  • Car Hire 28 days 140 approx
  • Food 5 per day, 140 approx
  • Camping, 15 nights at 8 per night average 120
  • Backcountry camping passes for all parks, 30
  • National park passes 60, Banff and Jasper
  • TOTAL 1040
  • Fuel approx 2p per mile per person, but have no
idea of estimated mileage ?? Joe says approx 40

12
  • I reckon for 28 days in Canada you will need to
    have 1,300 to spend
  • This sounds horrendous but you will be getting a
    lot for your money
  • There are things that I cant factor in, so
people will need to be flexible when we are out
    there
  • Insurance will need to be purchased, 70 approx
