Etiology

• Chronic stage following an attack of AOM with
  perforation.
• Relationship with persistent ME effusion
• decrease in thickness of the fibrous layers
• Abnormalities of humoral and cell mediated
  immunity
• Anatomical predisposing factors
• cleft palate, Downs syndrome, dysfunction of ET
  allowing reflux of nasopharyngeal contents
