Fundamentals of Naval Science
Digital Navigation
2Objectives
1. Be familiar with Digital chart and
Electronic Charts Display System 2.
Be familiar with the USN policy for the use
of electronic Charts Display System.
3Background
Electronic data base , operating system, computer
technology and the widespread deployment of
Digital display has now made it possible to
employ electronic charts at sea. In addition the
advent of continuous and automated positioning
system ( such as GPS), has made it possible to
take maximum advantage of electronic charting
4The benefits of the integrated system GPS and
chart data in digital format include
- Real time position . - Automated plotting of
the navigation. - Reduce Manning - Minimizing
Human error . - Alert to navigation dangers. -
dramatically increase awareness in low
visibility.

8Electronic Chart Display and Information system
ECDIS
ECTIS is a bridge integrated system for automatic
collection, processing and display of ships
navigation and other sensor data in order to
maximize watch bridge efficiency and navigational
safety
9Electronic Chart Display and Information system
ECDIS
ECTIS assist the mariner en route planning and
route monitoring efforts. The system displays
additional navigational-related information on a
GPS integrated electronic chart ( Digital
Nautical Chart).

11Electronic Chart Display and Information system
ECDIS
Use of ECDIS -should reduce the navigational
workload as compared to use of a paper chart.
- alter the navigation decision cycle by
minimizing the time required to collect
information and proportionally increase the time
available for data evaluation

13Electronic Chart Display and Information system
ECDIS
The system displays an electronic Chart and real
time own ship position . The fixes are accurate
and updated every 15 sec. This provide
navigation decision makers (CO, OOD, Conn. Off. )
constant and real time feedback on the
relationship of the ships position to the PIM .
14Electronic Chart Display and Information system
ECDIS
The Conn. Officer can view in real time an
eagles eye perspective of a precise position and
movement of the vessel, along with radar targets,
superimposed on the nautical chart. Proposed
track can laid out and alters in a second with
waypoints, courses and distances automatically
calculated.
15Electronic Chart Display and Information system
ECDIS
The operator may enable or adjust such a vital
item as danger depth ,surface contacts, contact
guard rings, own ships vector and danger area at
a touch of the screen .
Details on navigational aids , such buoys and
lights are available at the touch of a button ,
without having to thumb thought volumes of
printed Light list

17Electronic charts - DNC
The Key to the success is the availability of
reliable high-quality electronic charts. DNC
(Digital Nautical Chart) is a Data base derived
from the paper charts in use. This database is
developed by NIMA . NIMA expects to complete the
Navys worldwide DNC requirement by late 2000
18DNC is defined as
- A digital product that portrays selected maritime
significant physical features. - A Relational Database designed to support
marine navigation and Geographic Information
System (GIS) applications.
19What is DNC Data?
- 29 CD-ROM's providing worldwide navigational
coverage - CD-ROM contains one database
- Database comprised of 5 library types, based on
scale - General (lt1500K)
- Coastal (175K - 1500K)
- Approach (125K - 1100K)
- Harbor (gt150K)
- Browse Index (131000000)

26Electronic charts - DNC
Correction to electronic charts can be made
instantly and painlessly by downloading the
correction data via satellite or from CD-ROMs.
27NAVY POLICY
The Chief of naval Operation ( CNO) issued a
directive in march 1998 establishing minimum
ECDIS standards and calling for a transition of
the entire Navy fleet from paper based charts to
electronic digital Chart within 10 years. In the
mean time ships may use ECDIS systems for
enhanced situational awareness, but the paper
chart must be maintained as well.
28Epilogue
PLOT WHERE YOU ARE NOT WHERE YOU WHERE
29Epilogue
ECDIS -N used in combination with GPS and DNC
represent a significant step forward in
navigation. This technology is changing the
fundamental structure of the Navy bridge watch by
relieving decision making of many time consuming
data collection tasks.
