Title: The Perfect Singer :

1
  • The Perfect Singer
  • Steps to Being the Best Singer You Can Be

2
What constitutes a good singer
  • Breathing and Breath Control
  • Linguistics
  • Good Health
  • Engagement in music and text
  • Being open to criticism
  • Practice

3
Breathing and Breath Control
  • Good posture is the foundation of controlled
breathing, and controlled breathing is the
    foundation of singing.
  • Correct breathing and breath control are largely
dependent upon the action of the diaphragm and
the rib cage. The diaphragm is a muscle is a
muscle wall that can be found between the stomach
    and the lungs.
  • The diaphragm controls the air coming into and
out of the lungs through the trachea.

4
Breathing and Breath Control (cont.)
  • The larynx which houses the vocal chords deserves
to be cared for , for it has numerous functions.
Its a passageway for air and its like a
    protective cover for the respiratory
  • system. It also closes the air passageway so air
  • stays in the lungs.
  • The vocal chords resist the outgoing stream
  • of breath. Air passing through them causes
  • them to vibrate and produce tone.
  • Breath distribution can increase or decrease
  • depending on the intensity of the piece.
  • Humming is a good way to develop clear tone.

The Vocal Folds

Breathing Rules
  • Dont breathe between the syllables of words when
    singing a song.
  • Dont break up a phrase keep it long and legato.
  • You shouldnt change the rhythm to a song by
taking breaths in the wrong places.
  • Apostrophes and rests are a good indication of
where a breath should or could take place.

7
Linguistics
  • The vowels are the most important letters you
will have to learn to sing.
  • A male should cover all vowels when singing with
a full voice on higher notes in order to sing
with plenty of resonance. A female singer has to
think about opening up more on vowels and slo
think taller vowels or the diction can become
    fuzzy.
  • To sing an e vowel, the front of the tongue must
be raised in an arched position towards the roof
of the mouth. The tip of the tongue touches the
rear of the lower front teeth. The lips and teeth
are parted slightly and the lower jaw is relaxed.

8
Linguistics (cont.)
  • The Ah vowel should be sung with the tip of the
tongue forward touching the back of the lower
front teeth. The jaw is dropped but relaxed and
the tongue lies flat. The lips are rounded.
  • In order to sing an O vowel, the back of the
tongue should be raised higher than for an Ah
vowel and the tip of the tongue is forward. The
lips form an oval shape and the jaw should be
    relaxed.
  • To sing an A vowel, the tip of the tongue touches
the back of the lower front teeth. The front of
the tongue is lower than for e and the upper lip
    should rise a bit.

9
Linguistics (cont.)
  • To sing an U vowel, the back of the tongue should
be arched toward the soft palate. The tip of the
tongue touches the lower front teeth and the lips
    are rounded fairly tightly.

10
The Tongue
  • The tongue plays a very important role in singing
since keeping it raised helps diction to be clear
and the voice to resonate nicely.

11
Good Health
  • Good health is very important when it comes to
singing. A singer should have a balanced diet,
get plenty of rest, and exercise daily. Smoking
should be avoided by all means. Not abusing your
voice also means no screaming. Singers were never
meant to be cheerleaders! When you are sick , you
should sing carefully so not to hurt your chords
and also never force the voice. If it doesnt
    feel right, dont do it.

12
Engagement in Music and Text
  • As a singer, one must learn to not only
comprehend what they are singing and use proper
technique, but also become one with the piece
they are performing. Being able to convey a
message of love or sadness through a song is key
to a great performance. The audience should be
able to feel what you are singing about. They
should feel your pain or joy.

13
Good Criticism
  • Singers should learn to accept good, productive
criticism from their teachers and peers.
Sometimes, we get wrapped up in ourselves and how
we KNOW what sounds right and how we are the best
that ever lived. The truth is there is always
room for improvement and another person would be
able to hear us better and tell us what we should
work on perfecting. Becoming a better singer is a
process that never ends and others can help us
    get there.

14
Practice
  • Practice makes perfectcorny but true! A singer
should dedicate about an hour a day to working on
warm up exercises to better their technique and
also work on their music. The more you run
through your songs the better they will be.
Singers shouldnt over practice though because it
can strain your voice. Instead, try looking over
the piece and all of the composers notes to
    better your performance of it.

15
Now Sing!
  • Incorporating all of these
  • techniques together will truly make you the best
singer you can be. Lots of dedication and time
will help you on your way to great singing so
    sing on!
