The History of Vailsburg

• In 1931 Ivy Street School opened its doors as an
  elementary school
• Ivy Hill was an independent borough in 1931.

Lots of Changes

• In 1935 grades 6, 7, and 8th were added
• In 1955 grades Pre-K through 5th were removed.
  Ivy Street School became a junior high school.

Racism Education

• One of the main reasons Ivy St. School became
  Vailsburg High School was because of racism.

• A high school in the Vailsburg section of Newark

• Good test scores on their SAT exams
• Diverse student population
• When VHS began, most students were white.
• By 1988, when VHS closed, most of the students
  were black

• Some Vailsburg High School students went on
  strike to keep Vailsburg High School open.

Fussing Over Busing

• The Newark Board of Education met on February 24,
  1988, to decide the fate of Vailsburg High
  School.

High School Fades

• Vailsburg High School closes and high school
  students take the bus to West Side.

BUSING ENDS--VAILSBURG MIDDLE BEGINS

• On February 28, 1988 busing in the West Ward
  ended.
• The changeover took place in September, 1988.

• Vailsburg Middle was here for 16 years
• Was run by three principals
• Presently by Mr. Brewster

• Vailsburg has transformed many times.
• Appreciation

• Vailsburg Middle School has transformed a lot
  since it opened in 1931--from elementary to
  junior high to high school to middle school. We,
  the students of Vailsburg Middle School, should
  make the best of VMS while we have the chance.
  It may not be a middle school too long.
