History
The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 in
Boston to celebrate the 400th anniversary of
Columbus discovering America. The Pledge of
Allegiance was written by Francis Bellamy.

Changes to the Words

• The first change to the Pledge was the removal of
  the word my and adding the words the flag of the
  United States.
• The second change was to add of America.
• The third change was to add the words under God.

• I pledge allegiance
• This means that I promise to be true.
• to the flag of the United States of America
• This means to the symbol of our country.

• A republic is a country where people live and
  make up their own laws.

• This means it stands for the country.
