The Affective Filter Hypothesis a mental block,
caused by affective factors ... that prevents
input from reaching the language acquisition
device
  • -
    Krashen
  • Affective filter is an imaginary wall that
is placed between  a learner and language input.
If the filter is on, the learner is blocking out
input.  The filter turns on when anxiety is high,
self-esteem is low, or motivation is low.
  • These factors include but are not limited to
  • Attitudes regarding the primary and/or second
    language
  • Attitudes toward self / self-esteem
  • Attitudes toward the teacher and classroom
    environment
  • Motivation
  • Anxiety

3
  • How do we apply what Krashen said in reading
    and writing classes?
  • Is there a way to battle these affective
    factors?
  • Are there any factors other than emotional
    ones that influence learning?

  • Metacognition literally means "big thinking.
You are thinking about thinking. During this
process you are examining your brain's
processing. Teachers work to guide students to
become more strategic thinkers by helping them
understand the way they are processing
    information. Questioning, visualizing, and
synthesizing information are all ways that
readers can examine their thinking process.
    Through scaffolding and reciprocal teaching,
students are able to practice the skills that
lead to these overt acts becoming automatic.
