Lincolns Assassination
  • Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 4,
    1865.
  • Both northerners and southerners were saddened by
    his death.

15
Life After the War
  • When the war ended the slaves were set free.
  • In 1865 Congress set up an organization called
    the Freedmans Bureau.
  • The Freedmans Bureau was created to help freed
slaves who had nowhere to go, no money to eat,
    and no education,
  • The Freedmans Bureau created over 4,000 schools
    and hired thousands of teachers.

16
Leave or Stay
  • The slaves had an option to stay on the
plantation and work for money or they could leave
and find work on their own.
  • Many stayed because they didnt think they would
    make it on their own.
  • Others left because they wanted to see how it was
to live in freedom, not under anybodys control.

17
Black Codes
  • Black Codes were laws that limited the rights of
    former slaves.
  • In most states African- Americans were not
    allowed to vote.
  • They were not allowed to travel freely.
  • They could not own certain kinds of property or
    work in certain businesses.
  • They could be made to work in the field if they
    couldnt find work elsewhere.

18
Discrimination
  • Many whites still had hate in their hearts and
    felt superior to African-Americans.
  • This lead to secret groups such as the Klu Klux
Klan (KKK) and the White Brotherhood.
  • They burned schools, killed and attacked freed
slaves, broke into homes, burned their churches,
and did anything in their power to make their
    lives horrible.

19
Summary
  • The Civil War had ended but it created new
    problems.
  • Racism continued then and its still a battle that
    we fight today.
