Skill Set 1Word tools for the Game-Board
Assignment
  • Step-by-step information and tips on the skill
    set needed for this assignment

2
Drawing SHAPES
  • To be able to draw shapes in the Word program,
    you need the Drawing toolbar.
  • You can open toolbars two ways

3
  • One way is to go through View/Toolbars, and click
    on Drawing

4
  • A shortcut is to right-click on the empty area to
the right of the top menu

This automatically drops the toolbar menu. Click
on Drawing
5
Usually the Drawing toolbar opens up toward the
bottom of your screen. It looks like this
Well use the rectangle tool to draw a rectangle
on your page. Click the rectangle to select it.
6
Alert !After you select the rectangle tool, MS
will put this box on your screen. This Create
your drawing here box is a trouble-maker. Get
rid of it! Hit delete or backspace to get it off
your page before you continue.
7
When you bring your cursor up over the page, it
will be look like a plus sign (instead of the
usual I-beam for text).
Click and drag a shape. When you release the
mouse, the shape will have open circles (handles)
around it, and a green circle antenna.
Put the cursor over the center of the shape it
turns into a 4-arrow icon then you can click and
drag to move the shape to a new place.
Put the cursor over a handle it turns into a
2-arrow shape then you can stretch or shrink the
shape.
Put the cursor over the green circle it turns
into a curved arrow, and you can click and drag
to rotate the shape
Click elsewhere on the page to deselect the shape.
8
When the shape is selected (you can see the
handles), you can change the fill color, the line
color, or the size of the line.
Right-click a shape, and you can copy, paste, and
change it to be in front or behind other shapes.
9
Using TEXT BOXES
Alert !MS Word is primarily a word-processing
program. It starts out as if you are going to
type with normal requirements, and tries to tie
everything to the blinking cursor in the upper
left-hand corner of the page.
You need a text box that you can move around. The
tool is on the drawing toolbar. Click on the Text
Box button.
10
Alert !Microsoft wants to give you another one
of these. Still a trouble-maker. Get rid of it!
Hit delete or backspace to get it off your page
before you continue.
11
The text tool turns your cursor into a little
sword icon. Click and drag a rectangle on the
page.

Inserting MS CLIP ART
On the class website Links page, theres a link
to the MS Site for MS Clip Media. There are FOUR
best things about it Its extensive, searchable
by keyword, the clipart are small files, and the
.wmf files can be resized.
At the Microsoft site, choose Clip Art, and type
your keyword
13
Youll get a page (or pages) of available
pictures. Browse through, and when you find a
picture you want, click the down arrow next to it
and then click on the word copy.
14
Alert ! Word will paste the picture into a line
of text as if it were a letter. It will put the
image wherever the cursor is currently
blinking. This is where my blinky cursor was,
ready to type.
15
Remember how you could grab and move a rectangle
that you drew? If you click on this graphic
(select it) it will have black square handles.
Youll be able to size it, but NOT drag it to
move it. It will look like this
Square black handles appear and the blinking
cursor for typing disappears
16
Heres how to get it loose from the line of
text Click on the graphic to select it. Get
the Picture toolbar.
It looks like this.
17
Choose the little black dog icon (Text Wrapping)
and change it from the default (in line with
text) to EITHER behind text OR in front of
text.
Then the handles turn into open circles, you get
the rotate option, and you can click-and-drag the
picture anywhere on the page.
18
Then the handles turn into open circles, you get
the rotate option as well, and you can
click-and-drag the picture anywhere on the page.
19
When a graphic, text box, or shape is selected,
you can also move it with the arrow keys on the
keyboard. Sometimes thats easier than mousing
it into place. ----------------------------------
---------- FAVORITE TIP ! When you need
more precision in the movement or placement If
you hold down the control key WHILE you are
tapping the arrow keys, it will nudge the object
in tiny increments. Try it!
