2Jekyll Island
Jekyll Island was rented in 1886 for
125,000. Two world wars and a depression
happened in Jekyll Island. It was sold to Georgia
permanently in the 1947s for 650,000. From 2001
Jekyll Island develops 35 of land to families
with just a little money. In 2000 it turned into
a tourist island.
3Okefenokee Swamp
The Okefenokee Swamp is the oldest and most well
preserved largest freshwater areas in
America. The Okefenokee is made up of a variety
of habitats. It is 25 miles wide and 40 miles
long. It is home to many alligators, birds,
reptiles, amphibians and mammals. Many of the
plants found in the Okefenokee Swamp was used as
medicine and food by Indians.
4Jackie Robinson
Jackie Robinson was the first African American
player in the modern major leagues. Born in
Cairo, Georgia on January 31 1919. In 1941 Jackie
Robinson played professional football for a team
in Honolulu. Robison was awarded the Rookie of
the year award 1947. In 1962 , he was the first
African American inducted into the Baseball Hall
of Fame.
5Brown Thrasher
The Brown Thrasher is Georgias state bird. It
has yellow eyes. The Brown Thrasher has heavy,
black streaking. They have a white wings band.
They have yellow spots on their stomach.
6Savannah
Savannah Georgia is one of the most beautiful
cities in the United States. The British held the
city for the rest of the war. Savannah is
paradise for music lovers. In 1793 an important
event took place at Mulberry Grove, a Savannah
plantation. Residents of Georgia financed the
first steam ship to cross the Atlantic, the S.S.
Savannah.
7Georgia Aquarium
They have more than 500 species of fish. It is
the largest aquarium in the world. Before opening
the aquarium was working for Georgia
Tech. Georgia Aquarium opened in November
23rd. The second largest habitat, 800,000 gallons
was designed to simulate the natural habitat of
beluga whales.
8Tybee Island
The Tybee Island Lighthouse has been guiding
mariners safe entrance into the Savannah River
for over 270 years. Tybee is derived from an
Indian word meaning salt meadow. Tybee Island was
part of the Gaulle kingdom of Indians. Tybee
Island is located 20 minutes from Historic
Savannah. Tybees location on the Southern coast
made Tybee an important fortification during many
American wars.
9Coca Cola
John Pemberton was the inventor of coca cola.
The soft drink was first sold to the public
fountain in Jacobs Pharmacy in Atlanta on may
1886. Until 1905 the soft drink marketed as a bad
drink case it had cocaine in it. Coca cola has
sugar and caffeine in it. In Atlanta coca cola
was made.
10Atlanta
The Atlanta area originally inhabited by Cherokee
and Creek Indians. In 1960, Martin Luther King
Jr. gave his first sermon in a church in
Atlanta. Atlanta is the capitol of
Georgia. Atlanta is the largest city in
Georgia. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International
Airport is located in Atlanta.
11Ray Charles
Ray Charles was blinded by glaucoma at the age of
six. As a child, his family moved to Granville,
FL. Ray Charles was born in 1930. In 1962
Charles formed Ray Charles enter prize. In 1989
Charles had his first major song.
12Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
The Yellow Jacket mascot and nickname are the
most beloved trademarks of the Georgia Tech
athletic teams. In 1905, the Atlanta Constitution
referred to Georgia Tech students as Yellow
Jackets and they are still called that
today. Historians say the name was used to
describe supporters who attended Tech athletic
events. In 1893, Techs football team played its
first official game against Georgia. In 1969,
Georgia Tech used completely computerized
registration.
13Jimmy Carter
Jimmy Carter was born on October 1, 1942. He was
the first president born in a hospital. Jimmy
Carter was the 39th president of the United
States. His name is James Earl Carter, Jr. Jimmy
Carter was born and raised in Plains, Georgia.
14St. Simons Island
The first inhabitants of St. Simons Island made
the island their home over two thousand years
before the time of Christ. St. Simons Island is
one of Georgias most popular vacation spots. St.
Simons Island is home to the famous St. Simons
Lighthouse. John Couper was the first larger
plantation planter to live on St. Simons
Island. Slavery flourished on St. Simons Island
from 1749 until the Emancipation Proclamation in
1863.
15Cherokee Rose
In 1838, The Cherokee Rose was named in honor
of the Cherokee Indian tribe. The Cherokee Rose
is white and gold. The Cherokee Rose is 20 feet
long with viciously curved thorns. It is
Georgias state flower. The Cherokee Roses stem
takes root if it is left on the ground.
16Flag of Georgia
On the flag there are thirteen stars. Also on the
flag there are three pillars. The flag has three
red and white stripes. A man with a sword is
defending the Constitution. The Georgia state
flag is named Stars and Bars
17Coca Cola
The Coca Cola company has been operating for
more than 70 years. Each year 250 new Coca Cola
scholars are designated and invited to
Atlanta. In May 1886 Coca Cola was invented by
Dr. John Pemberton. Frank Robinson having good
penmanship, created the logo on the Coca Cola
bottle.
18Julia Roberts
Julia was born October 28,1967 Smyrna, GA. Her
birth name is Julie Fiona Roberts. Julia wanted
to be a veterinarian. Julia has starred in many
movies, T.V. shows, and plays. Julia Roberts
donates money to charities.
19Martin Luther King Jr.
The King center is in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin
Luther King graduated from Morehouse college in
Atlanta, Georgia. Martin Luther King JR. attended
segregated public school in Georgia. Martin
Luther King was born in an upstairs bedroom of
501 Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin
Luther King was a well-known civil rights
leader.
20Cabbage Patch Kids
In 1976 ,Xavier Roberts invented Cabbage Patch
Kids. He was a teenager when he invented
them. Cabbage Patch Kids are hand sewn. You can
adopt a doll in Cleveland ,Georgia. Cabbage Patch
Kids are born at Babyland General Hospital.
21Georgia On My Mind
Ray Charles was born in Albany, Georgia in
1930. In 1961, Ray Charles wrote Georgia On My
Mind and it became Georgias official state
song. Ray Charles was a blind musician. In 1982
Ray Charles was inducted into the Blues
Foundation Hall of Fame. In 1989, Ray Charles had
his first major pop hit in over 20 years with
Ill Be Good To You featuring Chaka Kahn.
