  • The Cherokees dwelled in villages of 30 to 60
    houses. The most important house, the town house,
    was located in the center of the village.

  • The Cherokee had two kinds of houses, a summer
    house and a winter house.
  • The winter house was round and had one room.
  • The summer house was square and had three rooms.

Food
  • The Cherokees prepared corn in many different
    styles.
  • The Cherokees stored food underground in winter
    so that it would not go bad.

  • Children wore little if nothing at all.
  • The women wore apron like skirts and leather
    moccasins.
  • The men wore loin clothes over their lower torso.

  • After the white men came the Cherokees started to
    wear cotton outfits.

  • The Cherokees inhabited the rugged southern
    Allegheny in addition to the great Smokey
    Mountains.

    bows.
  • The men fought at a distance using bows and guns.
    They also wielded hatchets, spears, and stone
    knives with great skill.

  • The first Cherokees were Kanat and Selu
  • (Lucky Hunter and corn).
  • The Cherokees felt that the world had to be kept
    in balance, so they held dances to keep that
    balance.

  • The men played a key role in tribal survival.
  • They hunted, fished, and had governmental
    control.

  • Most women did housework because they owned the
    property.
  • They also helped the men harvest the crops.

  • At age eleven, children were taught tribal
    etiquette, like ignoring hunger and pain and
    respect for elders.

  • All villages had a chief who was assisted by a
    right hand man and a speaker.

  • Cherokee women made spectacular crafts which
    caught the eye of many white men.
  • The Cherokees used a booger mask to mock their
    enemies.

  • The white man introduced guns and cloth outfits
    to the Cherokees.
  • The Cherokees first interactions with Europeans
    were the Spaniards lead by Coronado Desoto.

  • When gold was found in Cherokee lands, the
    Cherokee were removed from their original
    territory.
