8The Gather/Scatter Approach
9Strengths
Affirms the truth that gathering is for
believers.
Places the task of evangelism on the shoulders
of every believer.
Makes discipleship and growth a priority,
avoiding shallowness in biblical understanding
and convictions.
10Weaknesses
No test-drives for non-Christians.
It relies solely on individuals to bring others
to Christ.
It ignores the power of a fellowship to attract.
It makes the culture barrier easier to erect.
It ignores the potentially powerful
opportunities to model evangelism.
11The Seeker-Oriented Approach
12Strengths
Recognizes the limitations weaknesses of
people.
Makes church very attractive to unbelievers.
Higher rate of conversions. (It works!)
Recognizes the need for time exposure to make
a sincere decision.
Employs gifted people and the power of a
fellowship.
Takes seriously the Great Commission.
13Weaknesses
In a time-conscious, event-overloaded society,
the model often fails to penetrate the
commitment barrier.
It can be unworkable for those limited in
resources or giftedness.
It can allow seekers to set the agenda for
believers.
It can give the idea that the church is
method-driven.
14The Seeker-Sensitive Approach
15Strengths
Recognizes uses gifted people the power of
a fellowship, as well as placing responsibility
on the individual believer.
The unbeliever gets a real taste of
Christianity, not a lite version.
It is a deliberate attempt to make the church
as culturally friendly as possible without
changing its agenda.
It takes the opportunity of gathering to model
evangelism proclaiming the Gospel.
16Weaknesses
Invitations can become an irrelevant addition
to existing services.
Keeping the balance without moving to either
end of the spectrum is very difficult, and at
times feels double-minded.
17The Come and See Approach
18Strengths
Taps into seekers desires for something
greater than themselves
What you see is what you get. Little chance
for bait and switch.
Allows the church to be the church, and not
some outreach attempt to those who arent the
church.
Other?
19Weaknesses
It assumes seekers will be sufficiently drawn
to the church to penetrate Hunters barriers.
It can forget that Christianity turns on a
message, and not on an experience, however
attractive or spiritual it may be.

20Which approach is right??
21The Cold-Turkey Approach
22Strengths
Takes seriously the Great Commission.
Relies on God to change hearts.
Can be done anywhere, anytime with anyone.
23Weaknesses
It goes counter to our culture which is busy,
private, suspicious, bombarded with offers and
ads.
It ignores the power of a relationship to
provide the soil of love and trust in which the
Gospel is more likely to germinate.
It is the most difficult approach for most
people.
24The Relational Approach
25You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt
loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty
again? It is no longer good for anything except
to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are
the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot
be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and
put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on a
stand, and it gives light to everyone in the
house. In the same way, let your light shine
before men, that they may see your good deeds and
praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 513-16

Impact
30Strengths
Relationships are powerful bridges to
transparency trust.
It works. The majority of people who profess
faith continue have done so with the aid of
some positive Christian relationships.
Many who cant (or wont) strike up a
conversation spontaneously do feel comfortable
making friends.
31Weaknesses
The Great Commission isnt limited to your
friends.
It takes more time and investment of energy.
Once the relationship is forged, the
possibility of losing your focus increases.
Once the relationship is forged, if the
unbeliever does not believe, and you drop them,
the damage is very great.
