Collective Unconscious
  • Certain psychic elements passed from generation
    to generation through unconscious channel
  • Universal archetypes-emotional symbols-predispose
    us to react in predictable ways to common
    recurring stimuli.
  • Transpersonal
  • Derived from our ancestors to continually
    repeating events

  • Animus-Male/woman, Anima-Female/man
  • Mother- generativity, fertility
  • Hero- king Savior Champion
  • Demon-cruel evil
  • Trickster-Magician, wizard, sorcerer-entertainer
  • Persona-acceptable sidepeople pleasing
  • Shadow-dark side evil twin acting out

The Self
  • the central archetype, the archetype of order,
    organization, and unification
  • it attracts harmonizes all of the archetypes
  • and their manifestations in complexes
    consciousness
  • it unites the personality, giving it a sense of
    oneness
  • commonly projected onto figures or institutions
  • perceived as possessing preeminent power
  • embodied in the symbol of the mandala
  • individuation

Persona
  • "To prepare a face to meet the faces that you
    meet" Eliot, "Prufrock"
  • the public mask, the "conformity" archetype (a
    person may have more than one)
  • benefits provides social cohesion
  • yet can be removed (cf. Kafka)
  • dangers ego can identify solely w/ the persona's
    role, leaving
  • the other aspects of its personality
    underdeveloped
  • parents sometimes project personae on their
    children

  • being, but nevertheless he was a wolf of the

  • the animalistic, instinctual archetype
  • powerful potentially dangerous often
  • projected on others plays an important role in
    same sex relationships.
  • its taming is accomplished via the persona
  • benefits feeds creativity, spontaneity
    (instinctual wisdom)
  • dangers if not controlled, destructive but if
    overly suppressed, life tends to become shallow
    spiritless. If strigently suppressed, "the
    animal becomes more beastlike

  • emphasizes lower bodily functions
  • often takes the form of an animal
  • yet profoundly inventive, creative

    spiritual side, and reflects what Jung calls 'an
    earlier rudimentary stage of consciousness.'"
