2Pickens High School Dr. Virginia Hicks, Grants

- Artist Jim Creal came to Pickens High School to
do a unique Artist In Residence program - Probably the only high school program of its kind
in the nation. - Dr. Hicks wrote her own grant for
- Copper Etching
- Certain Precautions had to be met because the
process deals with acid Mr. Creal and Dr. Hicks
used vinegar, caution and a lot of creativity to
give students this unusual experience.

- Yoshiko Moon, of Studio Moon was the Artist in
Resident chosen to help these elementary children
understand Japanese art and culture. - She worked with the students on
- Sumi-e Painting, Japanese Caligraphy, origami,
hand made rice paper a tea ceremony and much
more.

- Francee Levin worked with ELA strategies teacher,
Barbara Wimphrie to help children learn to love
Poetry and Readers Theatre. - The goal was to increase interest in creative
writing and stimulate creativity in writing with
students who have traditionally not done well in
the skill of writing.

- Holly Hannon, Book Illustrator, worked with
students to create and illustrate a book. - This was a long process, but Teacher Blanton
learned a lot from the experience. - Ms. Blanton also went the extra step and took her
students with their books in hand to Liberty
Elementary to read the books with a first grade
child. The first grader used a simple rubric to
score the student book. - Great Success!

- Mr. Dean Eades, master dulcimer player, came to
Central Elementary to share his talents with
fifth grade students during the recent Artists in
Residence week. Students were able to work with
Mr. Eades throughout the week and learned
information about how and why dulcimers are
created, how to read music, and various aspects
of tuning and playing the folk instrument.

- Ms. Michaels invited Molly M. Jones to help 4th
and 5th graders at Crosswell learn how to write
historical fiction. - Students researched a place and time in history,
and wrote a brief narrative about that time
period. - Students also learned research skills through
this project.

Project
- The Memory Project is a project where advanced
high school students paint portraits of children
who have been abandoned, neglected, abused. The
reason for doing this is to give these children a
personal belonging to hang on to and to improve
self images and give them a special memory of
their youth. It also helps the high school
