Title: International News System

1
International News System
  • Global news communication is of fairly recent
    origin.
  • It only expanded greatly since WWII along with
    the modern information society.
  • The first transistor appeared in 1948.
  • The first generation of the global INTELSAT
system of communication satellites went into
    operation in 1965.

2
International News System
  • It is largely an outgrowth of Western News Media
    -- U.K., U.S. and to a lesser degree France
    Germany
  • Today, the world reacts politically much more
quickly and perhaps emotionally to events than
    ever before.

3
The Ethic of Western Journalism
  • The first duty of the press is to obtain the
earliest and most correct intelligence of the
events of the time, and instantly, by disclosing
them, to make them the common property of the
nation. The duty of the journalist is to present
to his!! Readers not such things as statecraft
would wish them to know but the truth as near as
    he !! can attain it
  • By an editor of
    the Times of London

4
The Ethic of Western Journalism
  • What we read was the ideal, actual practice is
    often much differentwhy?
  • Comprimising ties to the government
  • Independent media are subject to varying controls
from corporate interests that own them.
  • Yet, the news media of the West have more freedom
than media of other nations and greater financial
    resources and technology.

5
The World News Services
  • AP
  • UPI
  • Reuters
  • AFP
  • TASS
  • As shown they all come from current or former
super powers (UK France owe more to
    relationships developed during their imperial
    past than their geopolitical importance)

6
Second tier agencies
  • Dpa in Germany
  • Kyodo News service in Japan
  • ANSA in Italy
  • EFE in Spain
  • Mena in Egypt
  • Further, many national agencies serve as
important vital links, especially in the
developing nations. These national agencies stand
as key gatekeepers, deciding which news can and
can not be distributed to the local media.passe
    though..look at Iran!!!

7
Foreign Correspondents
  • Some of the great newspapers of the world
    maintain their own correspondents.
  • Several newspapers such as the NY Times and the
Washington Post, the LA Times and the Guardian
sell their news to other newspapers at home and
    abroad.
  • Your book lists bureaus and correspondents of
    major U.S. paperssee page 34.

8
World News on TV
  • Two very important TV news services Reuters and
    WTN
  • The majority of TV systems around the world
depend on these two services for all of their
    world news on TV.
  • The CNN phenomenon, BBC world and Euronews!!
