  • Chloes people (1 Cor. 111) give Paul a report
    of problems in Corinth.
  • The Corinthians write Paul a letter with numerous
    questions.
  • Paul writes 1 Corinthians to deal with these
    problems and address these questions.

17
The Situation in Corinth, Part 2
  • The church is invaded by some false apostles who
try to discredit Pauls ministry (2 Cor.
    1113-15).
  • Pauls makes a brief (previously unplanned) visit
to Corinth, but he is unable to solve the
    problem.
  • Paul writes a painful letter, now lost (2 Cor.
    115-24).
  • Paul goes to Macedonia, and there Titus tells him
that the painful letter has led the Corinthians
    to repent (2 Cor. 76-13).
  • In his joy over the peoples restoration, Paul
    writes 2 Corinthians 1-9.
  • Before he sends the letter, he learns that some
people are turning back to the false apostles,
and so he writes 2 Corinthians 10-13 to warn them
    not to do so.

  • Letter vs. spirit (34-11)
  • Veiled vs. unveiled ministry (312-46)

  • So that we can comfort others. (13-5)

    (46-10).

  • His hard work and sufferings (chs. 10-11)

The Situation in Philippi
  • A model church in the NT no criticism
  • Paul has been in prison (house arrest) in Rome.
  • Philippians sent Epaphroditus to Paul in Rome to
take care of him (225), and they sent money with
    him for Pauls expenses (418).
  • Epaphroditus got so sick in Rome that he almost
died, and he had to stay for a lengthy recovery
    period (227).
  • Paul is writing as he sends Epaphroditus back to
    the Philippian church.

27
Colossians(4 chapters)
  • (Meek, p. 40)

28
The Situation in Colossae
  • The church was threatened by a serious heresy
  • An extreme form of Jewish legalism, involving
ceremonialism (211, 311) and strict asceticism
    (221-3)
  • An early form of Gnosticism, involving angel
worship (218), secret knowledge (218), and
    deprecation of Christ.
  • Paul responds with a ringing statement of the
supremacy of Christ to everything one might
    worship or follow.
  • Ephesians presents similar teaching without the
need to address a particular heresy.

    grandmother (Eunice) (2 Tim. 14).
  • From Lystra, where Paul suffered so greatly
during his first missionary journey (Acts 161).

by the criticism of others (1 Tim. 412).

friend from A.D. 48 until Pauls death in about
    A.D. 65.

37
Philemon(1 chapter)
  • (Meek, p. 41)

38
Background to Philemon
  • Slavery in the ancient world was more like
indentured servanthood than like American slavery
    in the 19th century.
  • Onesimus was a member of the church in Colossae,
who owned a slave named Onesimus.
  • Onesimus ran away (a crime punishable by death)
but somehow stumbled upon Paul in Rome and became
    a Christian.
  • As a Christian, Onesimus has the responsibility
to go back to his master.
  • Paul entreats Onesimus to accept him (rather than
executing him), and to free him (Receive him as
    a beloved brother).
  • Church tradition tells us that Onesimus
(presumably the same one) was later the bishop of
    Ephesus.
