37Philemon(1 chapter)
38Background to Philemon
- Slavery in the ancient world was more like
indentured servanthood than like American slavery
in the 19th century. - Onesimus was a member of the church in Colossae,
who owned a slave named Onesimus. - Onesimus ran away (a crime punishable by death)
but somehow stumbled upon Paul in Rome and became
a Christian. - As a Christian, Onesimus has the responsibility
to go back to his master. - Paul entreats Onesimus to accept him (rather than
executing him), and to free him (Receive him as
a beloved brother). - Church tradition tells us that Onesimus
(presumably the same one) was later the bishop of
Ephesus.
