Title: The Solar System

1
The Solar System
Astronomy
2
Did you ever wonder?
3
What is the solar system?
4
What is the solar system?
  • The solar system is the sun and the objects that
    are traveling around it.

5
SUN
  • Our sun is an average size star similar to many
other stars in the night sky. It appears so large
and bright to us because it is much closer to
    earth.

6
What is the sun composed of?
  • The sun is mostly composed of hydrogen and
helium. The formation of helium from hydrogen is
what generates light and heat from the sun.

7
The Nine Planets
  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Earth
  • Mars
  • Jupiter
  • Saturn
  • Uranus
  • Neptune
  • Pluto

8
The Nine Planets
  • The path around the sun is called an orbit.
  • One complete trip of an object around the sun
    takes one year.
  • A year is different from planet to planet.

9
What keeps the planets in orbit?
10
What keeps the planets in orbit?
  • He describes gravity as the property of all
    matter.
  • Gravity is the force of attraction, or pull,
between any object and any other objects around
    it.
  • Gravity depends on two measurements, mass and
    distance.

11
Inertia
  • Inertia is the tendency of a moving object to
keep moving in a straight line.

12
Gravity Inertia
  • Together gravity and inertia keep the planets in
    orbits.

13
What makes a day?
  • The sun provides light and warmth.
  • All planets spin or rotate like huge spinning
    tops.

14
Inner Planets
  • Small
  • Warm
  • Rocky crusts
  • Craters
  • None have rings
  • All have atmospheres
  • Few if any moons

15
Inner planets
  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Earth
  • Mars

16
Mercury
  • Closest plant to the sun
  • Orbits the sun in the shortest time
  • Very hot on one side and very cold on the other
side because it rotates very slowly.
  • No moons

17
Venus
  • Hottest planet
  • Very dense cloud coverage
  • Lots of volcanoes
  • Clouds hold in heat
  • Temperatures reach 900 F
  • Rotates backwards
  • No moons

18
Earth
  • Water planet
  • Our home
  • Only planet with temperatures and resources for
    life as we know it
  • One moon

19
Mars
  • Has the largest volcano in our solar system
    called Olympus Mons
  • Strong winds
  • Pink dust storms
  • May have had water at one time
  • Two moons that move in opposite directions.

20
Outer Planets
  • Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune Gas giants
  • Pluto Tiny and icy
  • Dense and rocky cores
  • Dense liquids surround the cores of each planet
  • Each gas giant is surrounded by large envelopes
    of gasses
  • The gas giants have rings
  • All outer planets have moons

21
Outer Planets
  • Jupiter
  • Saturn
  • Uranus
  • Neptune
  • Pluto

22
Jupiter
  • Largest planet
  • Fastest spinner
  • A day is less then 10 hours long
  • It has a giant red spot-a storm-that has lasted
    over 300 years
  • Lightning bolts and auroras can be seen on
    Jupiters night side

23
Saturn
  • If you could find an ocean big enough, it would
    float!
  • It is less dense then water
  • It has the most visible and beautiful rings of
    all the planets
  • It is almost twice as far from the Sun as
    Jupiter.

24
Uranus
  • It has been called the planet that was knocked
    on its side
  • Because of its tilt, its poles take turns
pointing towards the sun even so, it is hotter
    at its equator
  • A day on Uranus is 17 ½ hours long
  • It takes 84 Earth years to orbit the Sun

25
Neptune
  • 4.5 billion km from the sun
  • A year is 165 Earth years long
  • A day is 16 hours long
  • Winds whip around Neptune at almost 1250 miles
    per hour

26
Pluto
  • Farthest planet form the sun
  • Made up of frozen gases
  • Only planet that has not yet been visited by
    spacecraft
  • Little is known about Pluto and its moon, Charon
  • There is a debate among astronomers over whether
Pluto should be called a planet

27
Constellations
  • A star is a large hot ball of gas that is held
together by gravity and gives off its own light.

28
Constellations
  • Stars arranged in groups that form patterns in
    the sky are called constellations.
