Topographical Survey
  • Primary Objective To get an accurate record of
the surface topography of both the east and the
    west mounds.

Topographic Survey
  • The detailed topographic survey of the east
mound failed to reveal evidence for the
underlying structures. However, it did provide a
complete frame of reference for the ongoing
    investigation of the site.

Scrape Survey
  • There are three stages in
  • the techniques of scraping.
  • Removal of vegetation
  • Removal of spit of surface earth.
  • Resulting surface is 0.1m below the modern
surface is scraped clean with wide-bladed hoes.

  • The visibility of surface architecture at Catal
hoyuk after removal of surface earth and scraping
    is excellent.

Conclusion
  • Subsurface scraping established that Neolithic
dwellings and occupation debris occur at almost
all points of the east mounds, but also that in
some areas these levels have been substantially
    disturbed by much later occupation.
  • Strongly supports the conclusion that there was
occupation after the Neolithic at Catal Hoyuk.

Linked?
  • There is a direct relationship between the
    magnetometric survey and scrape areas.
  • The survey has shown there are areas of clear
trend in the orientation of such segments that
they must represent the locations of similarly
    aligned buildings.
