PGI Gifts to Literacy
  • 76835.99 raised.
  • 10 to Host City Moncton - 7683.59.
  • 5 to Future Host City Fredericton -3840.00.
  • 5 to Future Host City Saint John - 3840.00.
  • Remainder divided equally between the New
    Brunswick Coalition for Literacy and a soon to be
    realized Foundation for Literacy in New
    Brunswick. (30736.20). In order to allow it to
    grow, no money will be issued from this
    Foundation for at least three years.

Application Process for Moncton, Fredericton and
Saint John
  • Criteria
  • Applicants are local literacy programs that must
  • Be operating for one year or more.
  • Have an existing volunteer committee accountable
    for the funds.
  • Use the funds for existing literacy programs.
  • Use the funds within one year, ie., before
    Feb.,2004.
  • Request no more than 650.00 per program.
  • Provide a report within a year on how funds were
    spent.

  • What the funds will be used for.
  • A simple budget.
  • Authorized signature.

Procedure
  • Application forms were sent to all Literacy
    programs in Fredericton and Saint John by the New
    Brunswick Coalition for Literacy.
  • Applications in Moncton were distributed through
    the Greater Moncton Literacy Advisory Board.

Selection
  • Applications from Fredericton and Saint John were
    processed by a jury made up of three members of
    the New Brunswick Coalition for Literacy.
  • The three members represented University,
    Provincial Government and Learners.
  • Twelve applications were received from Saint
    John.
  • Seven applications were received from Fredericton.

The Programs
  • Gifts were disbursed to
  • Community Academic Services Programs (CASPS).
    Small classroom settings for six to eight adults.
    (Provinces literacy program. Paid teachers.)
  • Laubach Literacy Councils. One-on-one, free,
    confidential tutoring to adults. (Trained
    volunteers teach this literacy program.)
  • Family Literacy Programs. Learning settings for
    families and children. (Community-based, paid
    staff as well as volunteers.)

  • Read Saint John a Laubach program.
  • 1100.00 for new technology and teaching
    materials.

  • Saint John Learning Exchange - five CASPS.
  • 650 to purchase high interest, low to
    intermediate reading level books for students.

  • Saint John Learning Exchange Family Learning and
    Health Program and its Homework Help Program
    received 650 to provide healthy snacks for the
    children and families who come to the programs.

  • Saint John Learning Exchange Learning Together
    Family Literacy Program in Fredericton.
  • 310 to hire a part-time person from this low
    income neighborhood to help with the program.

    specifically designed for adults with
    intellectual challenges and novels for reading
    groups.
  • Todd, Pam, Bobby and Steven are hard at work.

    calculators, GED books, etc.
  • Nicole, Cindy, Christine, Shelly and Sheila enjoy
    their studies.

    shopping for books!. Bonnie Ahearn, facilitator
    of the YM-YWCA CASP in Saint John.

  • 270 for a public relations campaign to attract
    students.

  • 370 for a Recognition of Achievement Ceremony
    for students and their families.
  • Barb, the facilitator, is planning the
    celebration.

  • 650 to purchase calculators, pens, pencils, GED
    books, GED practice tests, erasers, loose leaf
    and other classroom supplies.
  • Greg, Frank, Cindy, Myrtle and Alicia show off
    new supplies.

  • 650 to purchase adaptive equipment such as
    special ergonomic chairs, a foot rest, wrist
    wrest and special equipment for students with
    learning disabilities.

  • North Rotary CASP.
  • 650 for cultural learning experiences.
  • Students will go to the birthplace of
    Confederation in Charlottetown, the Museum,
    Reversing Falls the Martello Tower in Saint
    John and a play at the Playhouse.
  • Internet research will precede the events and
    written reports will follow.
  • June, Cheyenne and Linda use the internet to plan
    the trip.

    income housing community.
  • 650 to purchase craft supplies, books and
    learning software.

    (GMLAB) distributed funds to literacy programs in
    the Greater Moncton area. Debbie McGinnis can
    give an update after this presentation.
  • The same application procedure was used.
  • The GMLAB acted as the jury for the applications.
