  • Adolescence is defined by major physical
    developments
  • Adolescent Growth Spurt Adolescents grow 8-12
    inches in 2-3 years, changing pattern of
    childhood growth
  • Girls ages 10-11
  • Boys13-15

Sexual Development
  • Adolescence begins with the onset of puberty
  • Puberty specific developmental changes that lead
    to the ability to sexually reproduce
  • Females develop primary sex characteristics
    needed for reproduction
  • Girls First menstruation known as menarche
    (usually ages 11-14as early as 9 in some girls)
  • Males females develop secondary sex
    characteristics not necessarily needed for sex

  • Erikson said that all adolescents must face an
    identity crisis or turning point where they
    examine their personal values and make decisions
    or changes for the future
  • People who fail to complete this stage
    successfully will struggle with who they are
    what they are doing
  • Often have commitment issues

  • Intimacy vs. Isolation
  • Ages 18-30
  • Development of intimate social relationships
  • Adolescents young adults will either share
    intimate feelings with one special person or feel
    lonely because of a lack of intimacy
  • People who did not complete identity stage
    struggle here, and are often incapable of
    developing consistent intimate relationships
  • May also be impacted by early sexual experiences
    or abuse
