Title: What is Matter

1
What is Matter?
2
Matter
  • Anything that has mass and takes up space.
  • Volume
  • Amount of space occupied by an object
  • Matter cannot share the same space at the same
    time

3
Liquid Volume
  • Measured in Liters (L) and Milliliters (mL).
  • Use a graduated cylinder to measure volume
  • Meniscus
  • Curve at a liquids surface
  • Measure to the bottom of the meniscus

4
Volume of Regularly Shaped Solid Object
  • Expressed in cubic units.
  • Cubic meters (m³) and Cubic centimeters (cm³)
  • Cube
  • Volume length x width x height

5
Volume of Irregularly Shaped Solid Object
  • Measure through the displacement of water.
  • Amount of water displaced by an object is to
    its volume
  • 1mL is equal to 1cm³

6
Difference Between Mass and Weight
  • Mass
  • Amount of matter in an object
  • Mass of an object is the same no matter where the
object is located in the universe.
  • Weight
  • Measure of the gravitational force exerted on an
    object
  • The more mass an object has the greater the
gravitational force, therefore the greater the
    weight.
  • Weight can change based on location in the
    universe

7
Measuring Mass and Weight
  • Mass is measured in Kilograms (kg), grams (g),
    and milligrams (mg).
  • Weight is measured in Newtons (N)
  • 1 Newton is to about 100g
  • Pounds/ounces

8
Inertia
  • The tendency of an object to resist a change in
    motion.
  • An object at rest will remain at rest until
something causes an object to move
  • A moving object will keep moving at the same
speed and direction until acted upon by an
    outside force

9
Mass The Measure of Inertia
  • Mass is the measure of inertia
  • An object with more mass is harder to get moving
and to stop then an object with less mass.
  • The larger the object the greater the inertia.
