  • To provide a comprehensive array of aging,
    disability,
  • and mental retardation services and supports
  • that are easily accessed in local communities.

Changing Face of Texas
  • From 2005 to 2040, the population age 65 and over
    is projected to grow from 2.2 to 6.3 million.
  • A growth rate of about 184 percent!

Challenges of Aging
Baby Boomers
  • Currently between the ages of 42-60
  • One turns 50 every 9 seconds
  • Represent 22 of the US population, and 20.2 of
    the Texas population

Texas's 60 population is.
  • Living longer
  • Growing more rapidly than any other population
    group
  • Becoming more diverse

Challenges of Aging
  • Texas ranked 6th in the U.S. in highest rate of
    adult obesity at 25.3 percent
  • Cardiovascular diseases are among the 10 most
    frequent causes of hospitalization of people 45
    years and older in Texas
  • More than 1.3 million Texans have diagnosed
    diabetes and an estimated 343,000 additional
    Texans with undiagnosed diabetes
  • 46.3 - almost a half - of Texas residents aged
    55 to 64 reported chronic joint symptoms
    associated with arthritis
