Title: Key Questions for Chapter 3:618

1
Lesson 9 Restricted from Disorderly
  • Key Questions for Chapter 36-18
  • How important is consistency between word and
    deed?
  • Is God concerned about our day-to-day living?
  • What should be done with those who are
    disorderly?
  • How does Christ give peace?

2
How important is consistency between word and
deed?
  • What had Paul taught the Thessalonians?
  • (2 Th 310 NKJV) For even when we were with
you, we commanded you this If anyone will not
    work, neither shall he eat.
  • What had Paul done among the Thessalonians?
  • (2 Th 38 NKJV) nor did we eat anyone's bread
free of charge, but worked with labor and toil
night and day, that we might not be a burden to
    any of you,

3
How important is consistency between word and
deed?Contd
  • Because Paul had done what he taught, what was he
    able to say?
  • (2 Th 37 NKJV) For you yourselves know how you
ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly
    among you
  • (2 Th 39 NKJV) not because we do not have
authority, but to make ourselves an example of
    how you should follow us.
  • Is it important for us to be able to do the same?

4
Is God concerned about our day-to-day living?
  • What was one specific way in which the
    Thessalonians were being disorderly?
  • (2 Th 311 NKJV) For we hear that there are
some who walk among you in a disorderly manner,
not working at all, but are busybodies.
  • Is there a doctrine from God that deals with this
    kind of behavior?
  • (2 Th 312 NKJV) Now those who are such we
command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ
that they work in quietness and eat their own
    bread.

5
What should be done with those who are
disorderly?
  • What does Paul say should be done to those who do
not obey the instructions in this epistle?
  • (2 Th 314 NKJV) And if anyone does not obey
our word in this epistle, note that person and do
not keep company with him, that he may be
    ashamed.
  • What is the purpose for this treatment?
  • Are there limits on this treatment?
  • (2 Th 315 NKJV) Yet do not count him as an
enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

6
What should be done with those who are
disorderly?Contd
  • Why can Paul be so strong in insisting that his
    letter to them be obeyed?
  • (1 Cor 1437 NKJV) If anyone thinks himself to
be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge
that the things which I write to you are the
    commandments of the Lord.
  • (2 Pet 31-2 NKJV) Beloved, I now write to you
this second epistle that you may be mindful of
the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord
    and Savior,

7
How does Christ give peace?
  • What are Pauls final sentiments/prayers for the
    Thessalonians?
  • (2 Th 316 NKJV) Now may the Lord of peace
Himself give you peace always in every way. The
    Lord be with you all.
  • (2 Th 317 NKJV) The salutation of Paul with my
own hand, which is a sign in every epistle so I
    write.
  • (2 Th 318 NKJV) The grace of our Lord Jesus
Christ be with you all. Amen.

8
How does Christ give peace?Contd
  • What things in particular had disturbed the peace
    of the Thessalonians?
  • Concerns about outside persecutions (14-5)
  • Concerns about missing the return of Christ
    (21-3)
  • Concerns about fairness in conduct, e.g. everyone
was not carrying his share of the load (36-11)
  • They had concerns that were
  • external, internal, and eternal.

9
How does Christ give peace?Contd
  • Christ brings peace in all these circumstances.
  • Concerns about outside persecutions (14-5)
  • Christ will bring justice (16-8).
  • Christ is glorified when they endure suffering
    and walk worthy (15, 10-12).
  • Concerns about missing the return of Christ
    (21-3)
  • They can have confidence that He is coming and
all saints will be gathered together with Him
    (21-2).
  • They had been chosen for salvation (213).
  • Concerns about fairness in conduct, e.g. everyone
was not carrying his share of the load (36-11)
  • Through Christ they were exhorted to work and not
    meddle (312).

10
How does Christ give peace?Contd
  • Christ is our peace!
  • (Eph 214 NKJV) For He Himself is our peace,
who has made both one, and has broken down the
    middle wall of separation,
  • (John 1427 NKJV) "Peace I leave with you, My
peace I give to you not as the world gives do I
give to you. Let not your heart be troubled,
    neither let it be afraid.

11

  • From Chapter 36-18
  • We cannot teach what we will not live.
  • God cares about and makes demands on our everyday
