Presentation Overview
  • Access Function
  • Search and Retrieval Protocol
  • Z39.50
  • Z39.50 Concepts
  • Profiles

3
Access Function
  • supports users to determine the existence,
    description, location and availability of
    archival data of interest.
  • allows users to browse, search, retrieve,
process, manipulate and display catalogue data
    interactively.
  • allows users to inspect catalogue, sample and
    summary, and archival data.
  • allows users to order archival data.

4
Access Function
  • Core Component Catalogue/DB
  • Core Mechanism Search Retrieval Protocol

5
Search and Retrieval Protocol
  • Globally applicable Search and Retrieval services
  • Globally applicable additional services (order,
    browse, etc.)
  • Discipline specific Search terms
  • Discipline specific Retrieval content
  • most popular Information Search Retrieval
    Protocol Z39.50

6
Z39.50
  • ISO and ANSI standard
  • in 1984 for bibliographic information
  • Used by diversity of systems world-wide
    supporting information retrieval services
    (libraries, museums, etc.).
  • Version 4 under preparation
  • defines protocol control information, rules for
    exchanging this information, and conformance
    requirements to be met
  • Z39.50 maintenance agency
  • http//lcweb.loc.gov/z3950/agency/agency.html

7
Z39.50 Concepts
  • facilitates open interconnection of database
    users with database providers.
  • abstract database model
  • use attributes (search access points)
  • abstract data base schema
  • result sets can be referenced in a subsequent
    search query statement
  • allows the specification of profiles

8
Profiles
  • Parts of Z39.50 are mandatory (general
    interoperability) and others are optional
    (specialised systems)
  • A profile specifies the use of Z39.50 to support
a particular application, function, community or
    environment.
  • A profile defines the parts of the full Z39.50
specification that are applicable, those optional
parts of Z39.50 that are in this case mandatory
and those Z39.50 services that are excluded.
  • Examples of Z39.50 profiles BIB-, GILS, GEO, DC
    and CIP.
