Profiles

• Parts of Z39.50 are mandatory (general
  interoperability) and others are optional
  (specialised systems)
• A profile specifies the use of Z39.50 to support
  a particular application, function, community or
  environment.
• A profile defines the parts of the full Z39.50
  specification that are applicable, those optional
  parts of Z39.50 that are in this case mandatory
  and those Z39.50 services that are excluded.
• Examples of Z39.50 profiles BIB-, GILS, GEO, DC
  and CIP.
