Subject Complements
  • A word or word group that completes the meaning
    of a linking verb, and identifies or modifies the
    subject
  • Predicate Nominative

Predicate nominative
  • A word or word group that is in the predicate and
    that identifies the subject or refers to it.
  • Some caterpillars become butterflies.
  • The winners should have been Mary and Alexis.
  • She is the next speaker.

Predicate adjective
  • An adjective that is in the predicate and
    modifies the subject of a sentence or a clause.
  • You look happy.
  • Norma appeared calm.
  • How silly that commercial is!

Object of a verb
  • A complement (noun, pronoun, or word group) that
    completes the meaning of a transitive verb
  • Does not identify or modify the subject
  • The cat was chasing a moth.
  • We enjoy playing chess.
  • After she had read us the story, she gave us a
    quiz on it.

Direct Object
  • A noun, pronoun, or word group that tells who or
    what receives the action of a transitive verb, or
    shows the result of the action.
  • I took my little sister to the movie.
  • She had already seen it once.
  • Tom was driving his car.

Indirect object
  • A noun, pronoun, or word group that often appears
    in a sentence containing direct objects. It tells
    to (or for) whom or what the action of a
    transitive verb is done.
  • Usually found between the verb and the direct
    object.
  • Meli read us her poem.
  • I fed the horses some oats.
  • Jeff wrote me a note.
