WORDS TO THE WISE
  • If you have trouble deciding whether a word is
    being used as a preposition or an adverb, look at
    the words around it.
  • If the word is followed closely by a noun or a
    pronoun, the word is probably a preposition and
    the noun or pronoun is the object of the
    preposition.

  • SOMETIMES phrases will act like adjectives. The
    WHOLE PHRASE will describe a noun or pronoun.

  • ADVERBS modify verbs, adverbs, and adjectives.
  • You should handle antiques carefully.
  • Very old antiques are valuable.

  • SOMETIMES an ENTIRE PHRASE will act like an
    adverb. The WHOLE PHRASE will modify a verb,
    adverb, or adjective.

Prepositional Phrases as Adjectives and Adverbs
  • A prepositional phrase is an adjective phrase
    when it modifies or describes a noun or a
    pronoun.
  • The servers (at the Junction) are courteous.
  • The atmosphere includes mounted animal heads
    (from hunting trips.)
  • An adjective phrase usually comes AFTER the noun
    or pronoun it modifies.

  • A prepositional phrase is an adverb phrase when
    it modifies a verb, an adjective, or another
    adverb.
  • The servers dress (like movie stars.)
  • modifies the verb dress
  • The restaurant is popular (with young people.)
  • modifies the adjective popular
  • The restaurant opens early (in the morning.)
  • modifies the adverb early

  • Practice identifying prepositional phrases as
    either adjectives or adverbs on your own.
  • When you complete the worksheet, you may turn it
