How did Scotland become part of the UK ??
  • Prior to the Act of Union in 1707 Scotland was a
    separate country
  • Before 1603, Scotland had fought many battles
    with the English to maintain independence
  • King James VI ruled

How did Scotland become part of the UK ??
  • In 1603 Queen Elizabeth died and King James VI
    was invited to become King of England
  • they were still to have separate Parliaments
  • In 1707 the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh
    voted to be ruled by the Parliament in London

  • There are strong ties and bonds between the
    countries
  • For example, marriage, common defence, common
    foreign policy, common currency and British
    Olympic team

  • However throughout the years Scotland has kept
    its own identity

  • Gaelic is spoken in the Western Highlands and
    islands, although Glasgow has the highest
    concentration of Gaelic speakers as well as
    different dialects
  • In England there are also different dialects e.g.
    Scouse, Cockney

    novelists e.g. Walter Scott, RL Stevenson
  • In England poets such as Byron, Shelley and
    writers such as Shakespeare and Dickens
