  • The task of leadership is not to put greatness
    into humanity, but to elicit it for the
    greatness is already there.

LEADERSHIP TRAITS
  • Leadership traits are the qualities of character
    that everyone holds in some capacity. Good
    leaders have developed these qualities as
    strengths. A good way of remembering the 14
    leadership traits is by the acronym JJ DID TIE
    BUCKLE

  • The Core Values are the backbone of the Marine
    Corps they are what sets the Corps apart from
    the other services
  • HONOR
  • This quality guides Marines to exemplify the
    ultimate in ethical and moral behavior
  • COURAGE
  • This includes not only physical courage but moral
    and mental courage as well. Marines must always
    lead by example and have the moral compass to do
    the right thing no matter how difficult a
    situation becomes.
  • COMMITMENT
  • The overall determination and dedication of
    Marines to their cause. It is the ingredient that
    enables 24-hour a day dedication to the Corps,
    country, and pride. It is the unrelenting
    determination to achiever a standard of
    excellence in every endeavor.

  • These leadership principles are proven
    guidelines, which if followed, will substantially
    enhance your ability to be an effective leader.
    Keep in mind that your ability to implement these
    principles will influence your opportunity to
    accomplish the mission, to earn the respect of
    your fellow Marines, juniors and seniors, and
    make you an effective leader. Make these
    principles work for you.

    no sense be that of superior and inferior, nor
    that of servant and master, but rather that of
    teacher and scholar.

    produces a readiness for willing and intelligent
    obedience and proper conduct.

What is the result when a leader fails to
understand or apply any one of these traits or
principles?
  • The traits and principles of leadership are the
    yardsticks Marines use to determine their own
    leadership abilities and that of their
    subordinates. Our profession is deadly serious
    when it comes to the requirements for effective
    leadership by all Marines. The important thing is
    to realize that knowledge of these basic tenets
    of leadership is not enough the leader of
    Marines must instinctively apply these traits and
    earnestly develop in subordinates the same
    qualities
