PRIZES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE
  • Fees and Scholarships
  • Student Administration

16
What is an Academic Prize??
  • An academic prize is an award established by a
donor who wishes to reward exceptional academic
    achievement.
  • A prize differs from a scholarship in that a
student can not compete for an academic prize. An
academic prize is awarded only for academic
    merit.
  • The University currently has 349 active academic
prizes, covering all schools and faculties.

17
There are three main types of academic prizes
  • Annual Invoice PrizeIs the most common type of
academic prize. The prize consists of a single
cash payment to the prize winner. In order to
fund this type of academic prize, the donor is
sent a tax invoice on an annual basis
  • Endowed PrizeThis is the second most common type
of academic prize. It differs from an annual
invoice prize in that when the prize is
established, the donor/s make a lump sum donation
that is intended to fund the prize over a number
of years without the need of an annual tax
invoice. The prize consists of a single cash
    payment to the prize winner
  • Other Prize BenefitThese types of prizes offer
an award that is not of a monetary value. The
types of prizes offered are typically relevant to
the subject it awards (i.e. Geological hammers
for Geology prizes, Medical diagnostic sets for
Medicine etc) or can simply be a book voucher or
    certificate

18
How is it established?
  • A donor/s contacts the University to express an
interest in establishing an academic prize.
  • Prizes staff liaise with the relevant
school/faculty to determine what area of study
the prize should be awarded in.
  • The school/faculty draft a set of prize
conditions which allow them to determine how the
    prize winner will be nominated.
  • A Conditions for the Award of Prize form is
then sent to the donor for approval of the prize
    conditions established by the school/faculty.

19
How is a prize awarded?
  • In late October, the prizes staff sends out prize
    nomination forms to the relevant
    schools/faculties.
  • Schools/Faculties are to complete the nomination
form and return it to the prizes office by no
later than the last Friday in January.
  • If the school/faculty wish to have a prize
presentation ceremony and require the prizes
staff to provide certificates or any other
materials, then they also need to complete the
prize presentation materials request form in
    addition to the nomination forms.
