  • A career in Industry
  • From Pharmaceuticals to
  • Medical Devices
  • Alan Clark

University of Edinburgh 9th November 2006

Outline
  • My career so far
  • From Academia to Industry
  • A career in Pharma
  • From Pharma to Medical Devices
  • About Stirling Medical Innovations
  • Thoughts for your Career

3
My career so far
1989
B.Sc. Hons. Biochemistry (4 years)
Academia
Ph.D. (3 years)
Postdoc. (2 years)
Project leader (6 years)
Industry
Cardiology Product manager
2006

From Academia to Industry
  • As a graduate in 1993, interviewed with big
Pharma (Pfizer, Merck) but chose to do a Ph.D.
  • Why?-Enjoyed research, wanted to own my project
  • Risk of fewer openings in Industry when entering
as a Ph.D./Postdoc but enter at a higher level
  • In 1999, I was in the same position as you are
    now
  • Joined Organon as a Senior Scientist in 1999

Drug Discovery Process
  • Target Discovery
  • Identification and validation of biological drug
target eg Ion channel implicated in disease.
  • Lead Discovery
  • Assay is developed for the selected target.
Compounds are screened to determine whether they
have any biological activity on the selected
target. Compounds which are shown to have
activity on the target are labelled as hits.
  • Lead Optimisation
  • Hits are optimised into lead compounds.
    Biostructural studies may also allow
visualisation and optimisation of the compound's
interaction with the target site to increase
    potency and selectivity. Successful compounds
    enter clinical development.

6
Some aspects of Ion channel drug discovery
  • Cell line generation
  • Assay development
  • Compound screening
  • FLIPR/VIPR/Flexstation
  • Calcium-sensitive dyes
  • Membrane potential dyes
  • Hit optimisation
  • Electrophysiology
  • Patch clamp

7
A career in Pharma
  • Hard work, high reward
  • High compound attrition
  • Focus on cycle time
  • Opportunities for basic science (compound
    profiling /mechanism of action).
  • Publication depends on sensitivity of subject
    matter.
  • Career currency is high performance
  • Organon was a good place to work and provided a
    good opportunity for personal development

8
From Pharma to Medical Devices
  • Needed a new personal challenge
  • Big growth opportunity in Diagnostics sector
  • Short product cycle times and faster learning
  • Explore the interface between sectors
  • Vision of Pharmacodiagnostics
  • Stirling Medical Innovations is a unique and
exciting company with big ambition-great place to
    work!

Cardiology Growth Drivers
  • Cardiology conditions often require immediate
    intervention
  • Ruling out MI as important as positive
    diagnostics
  • Need for faster, cheaper, simple-to-use
    diagnostics
  • Patients on anti-coagulants require regular
    monitoring
