Others Dragged into Conflict
With Austria-Hungary declaring war, it would
force other countries to join in.
August 1, Germany would join in the war. They
were obligated to join in by a treaty that was
signed by Germany and Austria-Hungary. The treaty
was that Germany would have to help support
Austria-Hungary if involved in a war. ( and vice
versus.
So on August 3rd, Germany declared war on
Russias ally France. Germany then invaded
Belgium, which would bring Britain into the war.
After Germanys invasion Britain declared war on
Germany and Austria-Hungary.
14
Schlieffen Plan
The invasion of Germany on Belgium was called the
Schlieffen Plan. The Schlieffen Plan called for
German troops to hold against Russia. Combined
with a quick drive through Belgium to Paris
after France had fallen, the two German armies
would defeat Russia. Going through Belgium was a
key to the success of the Schlieffen Plan.
Belgium was a neutral, so German troops did not
feel any threats while crossing through.

Affects on the Belgium People
People of Belgium were terror by the invasion of
the German troops. It sent many in to hiding.
This is seen as the first major refugee crisis
of the 20th century.
We found the side streets blocked with their
carts, into these they had thrown mattresses, or
boundless of grain, and heaped upon them were
families of three generations. Old men in blue
smocks, white-haired and bent, old women in caps,
the daughters dressed in their one best frock and
hat, and clasping in their hands all that was
left to them, all that they could stuff into a
pillow-case or flour-sackHeart-broken, weary,
hungry, they passed in an unending caravan.
