Title: Technology Trends in Metering

1
Technology Trends in Metering
2
The Need.
The Transmission, distribution and commercial
losses in LT distribution system account for a
loss of revenue to the tune of 38 on an average
in the country. Of these, 8 are acceptable
technical losses whereas 30 of the losses are
recoverable commercial losses.
3
Present Scenario
  • Intelligent Multifunction Single Phase metering
    with Anti Tamper features
  • Intelligent Multifunction Three Phase Metering
with Load Surveys and Anti Tamper Features

4
New Concepts in Metering
  • RF Enabled Single Phase Metering
  • Post Paid Metering System with Disconnection
    facilities
  • DT metering coupled with Automatic Metering from
the meters connected to that particular DT
  • Dual Metering
  • Closed Loop Metering

5
RF Enabled Single Phase Meters
  • Present Status
  • Meters with Optical Port
  • Meters with IR/IRDA Port
  • Present Need
  • Meters with RF inbuilt module so that the
readings can be taken directly from the meter
    reliably without opening the Box
  • Common Protocol so that the reading devices are
    common

6
Post Paid Metering With Disconnection facilities
  • Present Status
  • Pre Paid Meters with relay are available
  • Complex Tariff structures makes it difficult to
    program
  • Difficult Vending Systems
  • Need
  • The post paid system is quite established and
needs to be coupled with a procedure which allows
    for self billing
  • In case the payment is not received by utility
then the meter should recognize the same and
    should disconnect the supply

7
Automatic Metering
  • Lots of efforts are on but are limited to three
phase meters and at best to Feeder and
    Distribution Transformers
  • Need is to integrate the Single Phase and Other
metering units so that a seamless metering can be
done from Feeder Metering to the domestic
metering to get the true Auditing and true
    calculation of losses

8
Dual Metering
  • Presently lots of consumers are getting supply
directly from the Utilities as well as from the
DG sets installed and run by local contractors
  • Being different in terms of tariff patterns the
need is to introduce Dual Meters which can have
dual measurement channels and can measure and
    different the consumption patterns

9
Closed Loop Metering
10
Identifying the Defaulter
11
Points to Take Home
  • This system shall be a end to end energy
    management solution for Distribution Auditing
monitoring thereby driving the utilities revenue
    to a higher level.
  • Real time monitoring of the whole distribution
systems viz. DT transformer, feeders, and
consumers and can be visually pinpointed on a GPS
    map.
  • The system will be highly cost effective and
contributes to a very efficient AMR solution.
  • The system is immune to human error of omission
    and commission.

12
Benefits- To the Utility
  • Big savings due to avoidance of thefts and
    pilferage
  • Reduced meter reading costs Saving Meter
    Readers, Accountants, Billing cost indirect
    Cost.
  • Enable automatic update of the system without any
    additional costs

13
Benefits- To the Utility
  • Improve customer service by
  • providing timely and accurate bills, automating
    outage notification
  • Eliminating manual reads
  • improving the process of resolving meter reading
    disputes.
  • Implementation of real-time pricing by use of TOU
metering and time synchronization of meter RTC
    with internet time server.

14
Benefits- To the Utility
  • Possibility to give statistical information for
power consumption of each region and on the base
of this information Electric Power Company has
possibility to plan and develop the system.
  • Ability to use GIS (Geographic Information
System) map that enables utilities to see
location of each meter and through it to receive
    history for energy consumption.

15
Benefits- To the Consumer
  • Accurate billing statements and improved service
due to fully automization and online connectivity
    of meter.
  • Improved security because the meter readers no
longer need to gain access to the property

16
Benefits- To the Consumer
  • Better analysis and reporting of power
    consumptions and power factor.
  • Provide Quality Power to the consumers by
instantly detecting the tampers, MD shoot ups,
    Load customer Load Profiles.
