- May 20, 2005
- After a few hours on the bus we arrived at
Stourhead. - This special garden created by Henry Hoare was
the highlight of the trip for many of us. The
exploration of this landscape garden was full of
surprises. As we walked around the lake we saw a
series of carefully composed views that make
this garden a living work of art. - Stourhead was created almost 300 years ago and is
perhaps Britain's most important contribution to
18th century European culture according to the
British National Trust.
3We started our visit here
4This visit was important for us because the
garden is still in a pristine state of
conservation and a walk across Stourhead is a
walk through the history of English gardens. We
could clearly see the intentions of Henry Hoare
almoust 300 year ago creating a Picturesque
garden
5By the Bristol High Cross we had a overview of
Stourhead by Mary
6St Peter's Church where Henry Hoare was buried
7The Palladian Bridge, with the Pantheon in the
background
8View of the Pantheon built by Flitcroft in
1753-4. It was directly inspired by the Pantheon
in Rome
9Colt Hoare introduced the Rhododendron ponticum.
Many of these were later replaced by better
hybrids that today make spectacular displays like
this one

26Stonehenge
- After our visit to Stourhead we continue our trip
to Stonehenge. About 9 miles north f Salisbury we
found one of world's most renowned prehistoric
sites the giant stone circle of Stonehenge. This
monument is considered one of the England's most
popular attractions and recognized by UNESCO as
an World Heritage Site
27The ancient stone circle of Stonehenge
28Remnants of the monuments erected between circa
3000BC and 1600BC
29Stonehenge's orientation in relation to the
rising and setting sun has always been one of its
most remarkable features
30The end of a great day for all of us. Now back to
the bus and continue traveling to London
