Stourhead and StonehengeBy Gus Tassara
  • May 20, 2005
  • After a few hours on the bus we arrived at
    Stourhead.
  • This special garden created by Henry Hoare was
the highlight of the trip for many of us. The
exploration of this landscape garden was full of
surprises. As we walked around the lake we saw a
series of carefully composed views that make
this garden a living work of art.
  • Stourhead was created almost 300 years ago and is
perhaps Britain's most important contribution to
18th century European culture according to the
    British National Trust.

We started our visit here

This visit was important for us because the
garden is still in a pristine state of
conservation and a walk across Stourhead is a
walk through the history of English gardens. We
could clearly see the intentions of Henry Hoare
almoust 300 year ago creating a Picturesque
garden
5
By the Bristol High Cross we had a overview of
Stourhead by Mary

View of the Pantheon built by Flitcroft in
1753-4. It was directly inspired by the Pantheon
in Rome
9
Colt Hoare introduced the Rhododendron ponticum.
Many of these were later replaced by better
hybrids that today make spectacular displays like
this one

Stonehenge
  • After our visit to Stourhead we continue our trip
to Stonehenge. About 9 miles north f Salisbury we
found one of world's most renowned prehistoric
sites the giant stone circle of Stonehenge. This
monument is considered one of the England's most
popular attractions and recognized by UNESCO as
    an World Heritage Site

most remarkable features

The end of a great day for all of us. Now back to
the bus and continue traveling to London
