Title: Splint Patterns

1
Splint Patterns
2
Getting Started with Patterns
  • The first step to making a splint is determining
the shape and size of a persons hand.
  • You will trace the shape of the hand on a piece
    of paper
  • We will discuss the specifics of how to draw the
    pattern

3
Considerations
  • Custom Pattern?
  • Standard Pattern?
  • Precut Material?
  • Soft Orthosis?
  • Cost of time and materials

4
Key Points to Locate
  • Wrist joints
  • MPs (IPs)
  • Thumb web space
  • Forearm length is 2/3s if included
  • Width of palm

5
Dual Obliquity
  • MP joints slant in ulnar direction
  • Index finger - Radially MP heads are just distal
    to the Proximal Palmar Crease
  • Little finger - on ulnar side, MP heads are just
distal to the Distal Palmar Crease

6
Patterns
  • Made on a dry paper towel
  • Final fit can be tried with damp paper towel
  • Clear plastic or bag
  • For acute injury or severe deformity
  • If another hand needs to be used then consider
that the dominant hand is generally larger

7
General Outline of Pattern
  • For outline, hold pen at 45 degree angle to part
of arm you are measuring to allow for ½ sides of
    arms.
  • Use a larger or smaller outline as indicated by
    size of clients
  • WHEN SPANNING MULTIPLE FLEXED JOINTS THE PATTERN
DRAWN FROM A HAND IN NEUTRAL WILL NEED TO BE
    LARGER

Radial Gutter Thumb Spica
  • Place hand Pronated on flat surface
  • Abduct Thumb

10
  • Mark
  • Wrist joints AB
  • MPs digits 2 5 CD
  • Radial Side of Thumb IP E
  • Elbow Crease F
  • Extend out 1/4 and down 1/4 for Thumb MP G
  • Forearm length H
  • Extend 1/2 down and out from 5th MP I

11
Wrist Cock-Up Splint
  • Same position of hand for thumb spica

12
  • Mark
  • AB Wrist Joints
  • CD MPs digits 2 and 5
  • E Thumb CMC or distal wrist crease
  • F Elbow Crease
  • G Forearm length 2/3s
  • H Extend out and down 1/2 from 5th digit
  • I Lateral tip of thumb
  • J Thumb web space
  • When connecting J to E draw a curved thenar
space with outermost point at the second web
    space
