Who?

• Pike County Skaters is an organization of skaters
  who range in age from elementary to high school
• -and-
• adults who support them, including parents,
  teachers, counselors, police officers, clergy
• We are still seeking new members to support the
  upcoming work of planning and building the skate
  park
• Please consider joining our effort!

• A skate park will provide much needed
  recreational opportunities for the young people
  of Pike County

-- an active alternative to television and video
games.

• builds stamina, strength, coordination, balance
  perseverance as youth practice hours on end to
  achieve the next trick.

  promotes cooperation as youth coach and encourage
  each other.

  youth and adult community leaders. When a park
  is built, the youth feel appreciated, valued, and
  heard by community officials and law enforcement.

  bring people in from outside Pike County.

  considering relocating to Pike County.

• Because younger children will have an opportunity
  to practice their skills, the number of skaters
  in Pike County is likely to grow after a skate
  park is built ensuring the parks use for
  generations to come.

• New business opportunities may be encouraged such
  as a skate shop, safety equipment rental, and
  skate lessons.

• Skateboarding provides a non-competitive activity
  for youth of all ages and is a constructive
  activity for at-risk youth. According to the
  Tony Hawk Foundation, The easy answer is that
  they skate parks provide a place for kids who
  aren't attracted to traditional team sports a
  place to go and express themselves in an
  individual and athletic manner. Getting kids,
  particularly at-risk kids, involved in a personal
  and esteem-building activity like skateboarding
  helps them build the confidence to do well in
  other aspects of their lives.

When?

• The Pike County Skaters held our first meeting on
  July 2, 2007.

What are we trying to achieve?

• Develop a public skate park in Pike County.

  of the park.

• Demonstrate strong grassroots community support
  for the park in order to obtain grant funding to
  build the park.

• Include the community and local organizations in
  the project, such as service organizations,
  government, schools, churches, and law
  enforcement.

Where?

• At the October meeting, the Pittsfield Park Board
  voted to set aside the Coultas family horseshoe
  area at King Park for development of a skateboard
  park.

The horseshoe pits will be relocated to other
parks.

What kind of park will this be?

• We expect to build the park on a concrete slab
  with portable obstacles.

• We will plan for the ultimate park, and then
  build it in stages as we obtain funding.

  that donors can sponsor something particular with
  a plaque recognizing the contribution.

  City of Pittsfield with input from Pike County
  Skaters.

CAUTION Inline skating, skateboarding and biking
are high risk recreational activities with
inherent risks of serious injury. All users are
responsible for inspecting equipment prior to use
to ensure that it has not been vandalized and is
safe. The skate park is unsupervised and
participants skate at their own risk. Proper
protective equipment such as helmets, elbow pads,
knee pads, etc. . . is strongly recommended. No
personally owned ramps, boxes or other devices
may be brought into the facility. No glass
allowed in the skating area. Please place litter
in trash receptacles. Be courteous of neighbors
and other skaters. NO PROFANITY OR LOUD MUSIC.
