Factors impacting on student achievement
6
The results of this study will document that the
most important factor affecting student learning
is the TEACHER. In addition, the results show
wide variation in effectiveness among teachers.
The immediate and clear implication of this
finding is that seemingly more can be done to
improve education by improving the effectiveness
of teachers than by any other single factor.
Effective teachers appear to be effective with
students of all achievement levels, regardless of
the level of heterogeneity in their classrooms.
If the teacher is ineffective, students under the
teachers tutelage will show inadequate progress
academically regardless of how similar of
different they are regarding their academic
achievement. Wright et al, 1997

What is powerful learning?
  • What is learning?
  • Are their different types of learning?
  • If so, are some more powerful than others?
  • What are the types of learning our students are
    currently experiencing?
  • What is the type of learning we want our students
to experience most of the time?

Teaching for Understanding
  • How do we do this? Its difficult work!
  • How do we know we achieve it?
  • What is understanding?

Whats something you understand really well? How
did you come to understand it? How do you know
you understand it? (David Perkins TfU Guide)
Action component - Performance of Understanding

What promotes POWERFUL LEARNING?
  • Start with your own experiences. Think once again
about the something you understand really well.
  • What factors seemed to be critical in making it a
    powerful learning experience?
  • Use your experience as a learner then add to it
what you know about good learning as a
    teacher. (from Julia Atkin)
  • Record each factor on a separate Post-It note.

Conditions of Effective Learning(Mary Kalantzis
and Bill Cope)
  • Condition 1
  • BELONGING
  • - effective learning engages the learners
    identity
