  • The library is cultural, educational and
    informational institution which provides the work
    of librarian and informational services,
    consulting and methodological assistance for
    regional libraries, popularizes the work of the
    library in mass media, governmental editions,
    summarizes the experience of deskwork, realises
    educational work for new librarians, organises
    literature, reading and events popularises
    librarian events. The average amount of users at
    Liepaja Central Scientific library is
    approximately 11 612 users per year.
  • Population served
  • The library services are focused in general for
    inhabitants of Liepaja city and some users are
    from Liepaja region. It is approhimately 14 of
    the population.
  • Personnel of the library
  • In the library there are employed 75 people. In
    ideal situation all the staff needs special
    academic librarian education.
  • Other data
  • The library was found in 1777. The total amount
    of books, periodics, etc. is 262.626 pieces,
    including 6200 rare editions. The library offers
    to its customers 108 periodical editions as well
    as 29 daily editions. After the retrieval of our
    independence a huge amount of ideological crap
    was destroyed.

2 Selection Criteria
Good practices in the annual Library plan This
is the most popular library in Liepaja city as
well as one of the most developed library in the
country. The library occupies 3 stored building,
with good equipped halls and a hall for
information. According to the status of universal
library, the library provides all types of
manning, retention, librarian processing and
inventory of literature, as well as ensures
acessibility to informational sources to each
customer according to the rules of different
normative acts. Services for the
community Library offers not only services for
offering different kind of information, but also
organises different exhibitions, also offers
services in listening different audio materials.
Good cooperation with other libraries and
museums. The Informational centres of USA and ES
are operating within the library. Lifelong
Learning activities Different educational events
exibitions, seminars, etc. Customers can use
interlibrary loan (SBA) to get books from other
libraries within the country, if these books are
not accessable in the library. Others The
library offers acess to different electronic data
bases, such as LURSOFT, NAIS, etc. The library
organises delivery of books.

3 Initiatives in the LLL field
Multiculturalism and integration Not actual in
our country. Promotion of local culture and
history The library supplies books for it and
preserves printed production in Latvia in all
scientific fields, focusing on elaboration of the
collection of original literature. Receives and
keeps the mandatory copy of books printed in
Latvia. The library is the entral place where
annual poetry festivals are taking place every
september. Education with other educational
agencies Cooperation with other libraries in
training of new librarians, cooperation with
Liepaja music High School and all schools of the
city. Others The library provides the use of
united librarian fund of all branch libraries,
organises the exchange of reserve fund and
creation of deposit literature fund, provides
literature exchange, orders and recieves
literature according to the needs of customers
from regional and foreign interlibrary loan.
