Shape-Up is not a diet or an eating plan. And
it's not just about weight loss. It is a
psychological approach to managing eating and
physical activity
5Cost of running Shape Up
- Each practice is paid an incentive payment of
500 for each Shape Up group they host (8-12
patients). - Staff time
- 8 sessions x 2 hrs 4 sessions x 1hr _at_ 10/hr
(HCA) 200 - 8 sessions x 2 hrs 4 sessions x 1hr _at_ 15/hr
(PN) 300 - (This include preparation time for sessions
1-8) - Cost of the manuals
- 12 manuals _at_ 16 each 200 (incl. pp)

Practices still yet to do the HLA training
811 weight management sessions
- Development underway of structured outlines for
11 sessions based on Shape Up and HLA training.
Designed so that patients can be seen in 15-20
minute appts. - Useful for individuals not willing to participate
in group education those with poor written
English skills or who need more individual /
tailored education and for HLAs who are unable
to hold group sessions - Sign posting to other local weight management
services e.g. Dietitians, Rosemary Connolly - Enhanced awareness of local physical activity
opportunities referral to the services provided
by the physical activity team at public health
and utilising the pedometer loan scheme
9Resources for ethnic minority groups
- Identification of available bi-lingual resources
currently in circulation e.g. DOH, Food Standards
Agency - Development of more visual and simplified
resources that fit in with the Shape Up programme
looking at portion sizes, the balance of good
health, meal timing, fasting and festivals

prescription costs - Paid CPD opportunities for PNs and HCAs
- A trained CBT resource person who may then be
utilised for other health problems with a
lifestyle change component
12Support from the PROJECT TEAM
- Support by the project Dietitian to all HLAs for
setting up and running Shape Up groups - On-going training support where required to aid
in enhancing the HLAs knowledge and confidence in
delivering weight management education - Review of the data from Shape up groups
baseline and 3 month with a report back to the
practice - Regular review of all written resources re
weight management and healthy eating given to
patients to ensure a consistency of information
standard of care
13Support needed from practices
- Support for the HLA when running the groups -
allowing appropriate time for preparation and
delivery of sessions, and clinical support with
any medical concerns - Feedback positive and negative, to the project
team re feasibility, implementation or running
of the Shape Up groups within the practice - Feedback / recommendations for how the weight
management service training could be improved
and/or expanded
