  • To advance and promote health and well-being
    through a holistic approach, recognizing the
    strength of partnerships between faith
    organizations and the health system, be it
    medical care or public health
  • Through Faith-based organizations, faith groups
    and communities receive health education,
    counseling, and a variety of support services

Faith communities nurture and provide social
support for the well-being of those that share
their faith, and they reach out to those in need
within their neighborhoods and throughout the
world. Inequities that create disparity in the
determinants of health for individuals, families,
and populations capture the attention of faith

SPNS Project Purpose
  • To develop and establish culturally appropriate
    services to empower American Indians residing in,
    or adjacent to, Robeson County who have, or are
    at high risk of having, HIV/AIDS and
    co-morbidities such as other STDs, substance
    abuse and mental illness

SPNS Target Population
  • American Indians in and around Robeson County who
    are at risk of transmitting or acquiring HIV due
    to their high-risk activities and/or lifestyle
  • Associates of the American Indian population

SPNS Project Objectives
  • To increase the amount of culturally appropriate
    HIV/AIDS services provided by the Healing Lodge
  • To improve the infrastructure of HIV/AIDS
    services in the community to provide culturally
    competent care and services by establishing a
    countywide HIV/AIDS Task Force

SPNS Objectives (cont.)
  • Increase the efficiency of access to care
  • Increase the number of testing sites
  • Increase the amount of HIV testing in places
    where American Indians access services
  • Decrease the time it takes an individual to be
    diagnosed positive and enrolled in HIV/AIDS
    services
  • Conduct in depth evaluation of activities and
    outcomes of initiative

Key SPNS Objectives
  • To empower the faith community to provide
    culturally competent HIV education and support
    services by
  • Developing Transformative relationships
  • Increasing the number of ministers and lay
    leaders who receive culturally competent,
    accurate information and support
  • Developing mentoring networks
  • Offering prevention programs for faith
    communities
  • Linking faith communities with individuals
    needing support (Food,Transportation, Housing)

Community Empowerment
  • 5 year American Indian empowerment grant
  • Years 1 and 2, the Healing Lodge will be hub
    organization
  • Years 1 and 2, Robeson Health Care Corporation
    will mentor Healing Lodge
  • Years 3-5 Healing Lodge will own grant
