Title: The Supremacy Of Jesus Over Moses 3:16

1
The Supremacy Of Jesus Over Moses (31-6)
  • Moses was highly revered by the Hebrews
  • Author of Pentateuch
  • The deliverer, who led them out of Egyptian
bondage and to the promised land
  • The Law-giver, through whom God revealed so much
    of the Jewish religion
  • Moses was the highest example of faithfulness.
  • The Messiah was expected to be a prophet like
Moses, Deut 1815, The LORD your God will raise
up for you a prophet like me from among your own
brothers. You must listen to him.
  • To be successful in encouraging his brethren to
be faithful he would have to compare Jesus with
    Moses.

2
The Call to Consider Jesus
  • Heb 31, Therefore, holy brothers, who share in
the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus,
the apostle and high priest whom we confess.
  • The call is given to holy brothers and those
who share in the heavenly calling
  • This is written to Christians then and now.
  • Heavenly calling- the call of the gospel and a
    call to glory
  • II Th 214, He called you to this through our
gospel, that you might share in the glory of our
    Lord Jesus Christ.
  • We must put our mind on Jesus and let it remain
    there

3
Consider Jesus as Apostle and High Priest
  • Apostle- one sent out
  • Moses, the Prophets, Jesus, The disciples
  • High Priest
  • Important theme in Hebrews- 217 31 414-728
  • Better high priest because he is our covering
    sacrifice, propitiation
  • Jesus pleads Gods cause with believers (Apostle)
  • Jesus pleads the believers cause with God (High
    Priest)
  • Whom we confess

4
Jesus Is Greater in His Person
  • Heb 32-4, He was faithful to the one who
appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all
God's house. Jesus has been found worthy of
greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of
a house has greater honor than the house itself.
For every house is built by someone, but God is
    the builder of everything.
  • Its not about faithfulness
  • John 174, I have brought you glory on earth by
completing the work you gave me to do.
  • Num 126-7, he said, "Listen to my words "When
a prophet of the LORD is among you, I reveal
myself to him in visions, I speak to him in
dreams. But this is not true of my servant Moses
he is faithful in all my house.

5
Jesus Is Greater Because He is the Builder
  • Jesus is worthy of more glory, just as one who
builds a house has more honor than the house.
  • Moses is part of the house itself. What Moses did
was in service to the Son!
  • Here again the author declares the deity of the
Son as creator of all things. 12,10 34

6
Jesus Is Greater in His Ministry
  • Heb 35-6, Moses was faithful as a servant in
all God's house, testifying to what would be said
in the future. But Christ is faithful as a son
over God's house. And we are his house, if we
hold on to our courage and the hope of which we
    boast.
  • Moses was faithful. His task was to testify of
    things to come.
  • Luke 2444, He said to them, "This is what I
told you while I was still with you Everything
must be fulfilled that is written about me in the
Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.
  • Moses testified but Jesus Fulfilled.

7
Jesus Is a Faithful Son
  • Moses was simply a servant IN the house
  • Jesus is the Son OVER the house
  • Not only did Jesus do the work given to him, he
was given authority over all things of God
  • Matt 2818, Then Jesus came to them and said,
"All authority in heaven and on earth has been
    given to me.
  • John 335, The Father loves the Son and has
    placed everything in his hands.
  • Eph 122, And God placed all things under his
feet and appointed him to be head over everything
    for the church,

8
Conclusion
  • How is Jesus superior to Moses?
  • Not in faithfulness
  • In Person and Service
  • Moses was a servant- Jesus is the builder
  • Moses served In the house- Jesus is the Son Over
    the house
  • We are the house of Christ
  • 1 Tim 315, if I am delayed, you will know how
people ought to conduct themselves in God's
household, which is the church of the living God,
the pillar and foundation of the truth.

9
Conclusion
  • Eph 211-22, Therefore, remember that formerly
you who are Gentiles by birth and called
"uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the
circumcision" (that done in the body by the hands
of men)-- remember that at that time you were
separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship
in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the
promise, without hope and without God in the
world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were
far away have been brought near through the blood
of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has
made the two one and has destroyed the barrier,
the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in
his flesh the law with its commandments and
regulations. His purpose was to create in himself
one new man out of the two, thus making peace,
and in this one body to reconcile both of them to
God through the cross, by which he put to death
their hostility. He came and preached peace to
you who were far away and peace to those who were
near. For through him we both have access to the
Father by one Spirit. Consequently, you are no
longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens
with God's people and members of God's household,
built on the foundation of the apostles and
prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief
cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined
together and rises to become a holy temple in the
Lord. And in him you too are being built together
to become a dwelling in which God lives by his
    Spirit.

  • Great News but conditional.
  • Heb 36, And we are his house, if we hold on to
our courage and the hope of which we boast.
  • IF
  • We must hold fast
  • Is your faith wavering?
  • fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and
    high priest whom we confess.
