  • Bacterial vs Viral
  • Neisseria meningitidis (Immediately reportable)
  • Streptococcus pneumonae
  • Enteroviruses, Coxsackievirus, Adenovirus,

  • Absentee rates up to 30
  • Can be prevented

Shigellosis
  • Caused by one of four species of Shigella
  • Most common in Texas is Shigella sonnei
  • Extremely low infectious dose
  • Elementary schools and Child care centers are
    amplification points
  • Other families members often affected.
