    designed to "forecast the state of practice" of
    systems engineering for the far-term (15 years)

Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is the
formalized application of modeling to support
system requirements, design, analysis,
verification and validation, beginning in the
conceptual design phase and continuing throughout
development and later life cycle phases.

Vision Model-Based SE (1)
  • Complex global product development will demand
    adaptive and accurate methods to communicate
    system specifications and design among team
    members. MBSE is an enabling approach.
  • MBSE can integrate engineering disciplines to
    provide common understanding and a firm
    foundation for specifying, designing, analyzing,
    verifying, and validating the system throughout
    its life cycle

Vision Model-Based SE (2)
  • MBSE will evolve to support predictive and
    effects-based modeling to better understand how
    systems impact the broader environment
  • To accomplish this, MBSE must extend modeling
    beyond hardware and software systems to integrate
    with models of scientific phenomenology, social,
    economic, political, and human performance
  • MBSE characteristics will include
  • Domain-specific language to allow modeling in
    user domain
  • Extensive reuse of model libraries, taxonomies
    and design patterns
  • Reliable and secure data exchange
  • Multi-discipline standards that provide
  • Mathematical foundations to support high fidelity
    and real world representations
  • Management of and integration across a
    distributed model repository
