  • XTOD
  • Transport the x-ray beam, in vacuum, to
    experimental stations
  • Condition the x-ray beam, with attenuators and
    apertures
  • Analyze the x-ray beam, with sophisticated
    diagnostics
  • XES
  • Provide basic infrastructure required for
    experimenters
  • Build instrument for Atomic Physics experiments
  • Advanced x-ray detector RD
  • Laser
  • Coordinate laser design and acquisition
    throughout LCLS

XTOD Status
  • Design phase ending
  • Layout details almost complete
  • Nearly all technical components through
    Preliminary Design Review phase
  • Procurements have begun
  • LLNL team is working well with SLAC

XES Status
  • Now in design phase
  • AMO instrument design going well
  • 2-d detector development going well
  • Controls area much improved
  • PPS stopper design through PDR

Effects of the CR
  • CR caused delays and inefficiencies in FY07
  • Design reviews were delayed due to uncertain
    scope, schedule and busy managers
  • XTOD procurements were delayed in FY07

  • Phased approach to X-ray beamline delivery
  • NEH in FY09, FEH in FY10
  • Diagnostics ready for first light in May 2009
  • Do first AMO experiments in FY2009

Risks
  • FY08 budget crunch - some XTOD work might be
    delayed further (from FY08 to FY09)
  • One could delay some FEE and NEH controls work
    (300k total)
  • This would add slight cost risk and significant
    schedule risk for experimental work in FY09
  • XTOD and XES work is fund-rate limited

  • Speed up X-ray monitors in FEE (300k)
  • Speed up NEH controls and motors (450k)
  • Speed up XES laser system (340k)
  • Speed up AMO focusing mirrors (115k)
