Transformations
  • Effects of Moores Law and Metcalfs Law yield
    some great opportunities and challenges
  • This in turn starts to blur traditional
business segments and morph them into something
    new
  • Computing / Communications / web 2.0
  • Disruptive Broadcasting TV on the Net
  • Disruptive Communications eBay/Skype

5
Opportunities in Services
  • Opportunity to leverage all of the great
platforms in front of us, connect the dots and
    offer new services.
  • Suggestion Start with a clean page of paper and
    re-solve the basic program
  • What will emerge is a set of new opportunities
and some new challenges (think about Skype and
    ITXC)

6
IPTV Needs a New Name
  • It just does

7
TV is just another Application
  • TV (like voice) is now just another application
  • The Internet is a new TV Channel
  • Live8 (AOL Music)
  • Video Music Awards (MTV Overdrive)
  • BBC moving to release TV shows on the Internet
  • Disney offering content on iTunes
  • Introduction of Disruptive Broadcasting
    Technologies
  • Slingmedia
  • Current.tv
  • Roadcasting
  • Video iPod

8
Transformation of Internet Broadcasting
  • LiveAid, July 1985 (London and Philadelphia)
  • Day-long broadcast on MTV
  • One-time-only broadcast
  • Live8, July 2005 (multiple cities, worldwide)
  • Day-long broadcast on MTV, VH-1
  • Webcast on AOL Music (the first true realization
of the potential of webcasting) and available
    on-demand, indefinitely

9
We need Consumer Multicast
  • I want my Multicast on consumer broadband
    networks.
  • Bring back the MBone. The time is right to
provision the broadband consumer with access.
  • The entire disruptive broadcasting space gets
accelerated once Multicast becomes available on
    the public Internet.
  • BitTorrent is just another channel for video
distribution but not a replacement for a platform
to facilitate live video broadcasting on the net.

10
IP Communications works great in Emergency
Conditions
IP Communications resilient in the face of...
Hurricane Katrina
  • Did the PSTN work? no.
  • Did cellular work? no.
  • Did VoIP work? YES!

11
We need to protect our Internet Freedoms
  • We need to be awake as the FCC drafts their
    language for Internet Wiretapping, CALEA
  • We need to speak up when the Senate puts to vote
new E911 demands for the IP Communications
    Industry
  • We need to be there to protect the broadband
communication platforms and keep them open and
    unfettered.

12
Internet Freedoms and User Empowerment
  • Users should have access to their choice of legal
    content
  • Users should be able to run applications of their
    choice
  • Users should be permitted to attach any devices
they choose to the connection in their homes
  • Users should know that their personal information
is safeguarded, except to the extent necessary to
    abide by law enforcement obligations.

13
Protecting the Internet
  • Support and Join organizations like the Global IP
    Alliance and the VON Coalition
  • Global IP Alliance provides a clearinghouse for
    Internet Advocates worldwide.
