An Interactive Brachial Plexus Web-Based Tutorial
for Medical Gross Anatomy
Lisa D. Cain, Ph.D. Department of Neuroscience
and Cell Biology
2
Background
  • Computer-based learning is becoming a prominent
feature of medical education (Tonkin et. al.
    2006).
  • Computer-based learning in medical education
    increases comprehension and retention of
information (Candler Blair, 1988 Hersh, 1999,
    Gould, 2001).
  • Online tutorials enhance learning in Gross
    Anatomy (Gould, 2006).

3
Rationale and Goal
  • Rationale
  • There was no interactive online tutorial in
Gross Anatomy to assist students in learning
    structures on the cadaver.
  • Goal
  • To provide an interactive tool to assist
students in learning the structures of the human
    body outside of the lab.

4
Purpose
Provide an additional study tool for laboratory
Gross Anatomy
Increase students ability to learn structures
on the cadaver

Outcomes and Summary
  • In the GAR 2006 survey, all questions with the
exception of one received 82 and greater in the
combined Strongly agree and Agree category.
  • Students felt that the tutorial enhanced their
ability to understand the brachial plexus and
identify the structures on the human body.
  • Additional tutorials in the Gross Anatomy lab
have been implemented since the utilization of
    the brachial plexus tutorial.
  • Cranial Tutorial
