Title: Pedestals

1
Pedestals
  • Existing and Future

2
Pedestals key points
  • Chorus has pedestals, but our design will need to
be reviewed in light of the recent National
    Environmental Standards
  • Chorus will offer pedestal co-location services
to our customers on a commercial basis
  • Once installed, space management within a
pedestal will be subject to the terms of the
    Sub-loop Services STD.

3
National Environmental Standard (NES)
  • The National Environmental Standards for
Telecommunication facilities came into force in
    September 2008.
  • The regulations set out various telecommunication
plant that can be installed under this umbrella
if they fall within various conditions.

4
NES and the Cabinet(s)
  • The regulations set the footprint a cabinet can
occupy and the maximum height i.e. 1.4m2 and
1.8m respectively for Urban residential areas.
  • They also set noise requirements external to the
    cabinet.
  • A second cabinet can be placed along the first
cabinet in an urban residential area if
  • it can be contained within the 1.4m2
    footprintand
  • it is no higher than 900mm from the concrete
    foundation plinth.
  • The alternative is to place the second cabinet a
minimum of 30 meters away from the first
  • Note that there are other conditions that may
apply depending on the areas classification in
    the relevant District Plan.

5
Existing Pedestal
  • The existing pedestal
  • 19 rack mount vertically mounted
  • 11RU mounting space
  • 450 watts heat dissipation
  • no local power and
  • all services and terminations are in the parent
    cabinet
  • The cabinet does not comply with the National
Environmental Standards as a second cabinet on a
    common site.
  • The pedestals height of 1095mm exceeds the 900mm
    limit
  • Note that it can still be installed either 30
metres away or apply for permission outside the
    NES

6
Proposed Pedestal Redesign
  • Initial discussions have been held to design a
pedestal which complies with the NES.
  • With the experience of Eaton it is expected that
the redesign will be very straight forward.
  • Depending on the changes required, a new version
would require about 3 months for design and
    prototype production.
  • It would be another 2 months before a new
pedestal would roll off the production line.
