A couple of points
  • Introducing Ms Emma Owens Clinical Placement
    Unit
  • Double check your roster allocated your
    placements?
  • Are you enrolled correctly? the Uni cant help
    you once the due date is passed plus you need to
    be enrolled to have insurance cover
  • Name badges must be ordered by this Friday and
    paid at time of ordering (Dont forget your tops)
  • Chemplus deal
  • If you found an interstate placements yourself
    let Karen know of the arrangements ASAP

Aims
  • Gain insight in the practice of pharmacy and
    health
  • Participate in health- and pharmacy-related
    activities (where possible and appropriate)
  • Work with pharmacists and other health
    professionals to participate in patient care
    activities
  • To talk with pharmacists and others on issues of
    interest
  • Explore career options

How to fail your placement
  • Show boredom
  • Dont listen
  • Dont try
  • Hiding
  • Turn up late
  • Dont ask appropriate questions
  • Do something thats illegal or unethical
  • You have a problem but dont contact me

The placement is
  • All about taking the opportunity to practice
    applying your knowledge and skills in a real life
    setting
  • All about showing interest and initiative (you
    never know who your future employer will be!)
  • Not about just doing enough to complete your work
    book exercises
  • these exercises are designed to give you and your
    preceptor a framework for your placement

Assessment
  • Your preceptor will mark specific work book
    exercises. A proforma mark sheet is provided for
    the preceptor
  • You to check the assessment requirements for each
    exercise
  • Its your responsibility to ensure the preceptor
    marks these exercises
  • Its your responsibility to ask for feedback

Assessment
  • The balance of the exercises will be marked upon
    receipt of the work book
  • The material must be readable and professionally
    written!
  • The work book must be submitted by the due date
  • Extension applications must be made by at least 7
    days before the due date
  • Remember that Academic Integrity applies to these
    Courses

Continuing Professional Development
  • All practising Pharmacists are required to
    participate in the CPD program. This is run by
    the Pharmacy Board to ensure pharmacists are
    competent.
  • Read all about the ENRICH program by accessing
    the web site. You will need to prepare for this
    exercise BEFORE the start of the placement.
  • Its your responsibility to obtain and record
    your feedback
  • Not marked, but has to be completed before I mark
    the rest of the book.

  • Usually a written report of about 4500 words

The Work Book
  • You should read your work book well before you
    start the placement
  • This means reading the
  • General Introduction
  • Note for Students
  • Exercises
  • Assessment requirements, and
  • Appendices

Your responsibilities
  • Community pharmacy TGA rural hospital only
  • Contact your preceptor about 2 weeks prior to
    the start of the placement and have a
    conversation.
  • You do not need to send a CV that has already
    been done

  • Malaysian placements
  • All students are to report to the chief
    pharmacist
  • Discuss with pharmacist what is possible at site
  • Need a letter from UniSA and Malaysian NRIC
  • At all times in the hospital
  • wear office attire and tie for males
  • white coat with UniSA name-tag/badge

  • Complete the Placement Objectives
  • Remember that its your responsibility to get the
    exercises signed by preceptors and to ensure they
    understand the Exercise requirements (including
    compulsory/replaceable, feedback for the CPD
    exercise)

  • Use your objectives to work out a program with
    your preceptor during the orientation session at
    the start of your placement.
  • Always listen carefully and ask plenty of
    questions
  • Ensure you fulfil the requirements of Core
    Behaviours

  • you need to inform the preceptor if you are ill
    as soon as possible
  • then you need to phone/email me or Karen
  • Confidentiality
  • You should never talk about patients outside the
    professional area
  • You will lose 20 of your total mark if you leave
    a name of a patient or Dr in your work book (even
    if you didnt mean to!)

My responsibilities
  • Contact Geoff if you have any problems with your
    placement before it gets serious!
  • My role is to support both students and
    preceptors to ensure both parties get the best
    out of the placement.
  • On very rare occasions I will take a student out
    of a placement and find a new one.
  • For students in Malaysia, contact Mr Narinder
    (see workbook for details) or else email me.

EXERCISES
  • Read your exercises carefully
  • Take note of the Competency box go and read the
    PSA standards.
  • I give you some hints and important information
    in the notes dont read them at your peril!

Medicines Review
  • Not all pharmacists are involved in HMR
  • You may be lucky to accompany an HMR pharmacist
  • Your pharmacy may have case studies of HMRs
    access one without seeing the final report!
    After you have had a go and completed the
    exercise in the work book, compare your judgement
    with the HMR pharmacist's opinion
  • Where there is no HMR undertaken and you are
    unable to achieve the alternatives, email me and
    I will send you a mock HMR to complete.

Patient counselling
  • Aim for a minimum of ten interactions
  • You should practice using a CMI as frequently as
    possible
  • When speaking with people who are picking up
    repeats, consider asking
  • How well is your condition controlled/managed
  • Do you think your medication is working?
  • Have you noticed anything different recently?

Teaching your pharmacistCase study/oral
presentation
  • An opportunity to give something back
  • Community
  • Choose a recently released Mx, or talk with your
    pharmacist
  • You need to be critical of the information, not
    simply repeat the PI!
  • Remember no pharmacies have AV aids
  • Hospital
  • Work with your pharmacist to identify a case
  • Read the notes accompanying the exercise
  • Determine type and availability of AV aids

Cant do an exercise?
  • There are mandatory exercises and replaceable
    exercises in some placement sites
  • You must complete the mandatory exercises.
  • You can chose to do the exercises outlined in the
    book or replace them with another exercise.
    Consult your precpetor.

Your placement is unusual!
  • Some placements dont fit into the traditional
    mold eg TGA, placement with an aboriginal health
    service with no pharmacist, Helping Hand Inc,
    overseas placement other than Malaysia or
    Singapore, podiatry, aged care)
  • Your workbook and assessment will be
    individualised to suit the placement this will
    be done by Dr March in consultation with the
    placement supervisor

  • I am available to discuss any issues you wish to
    confidentially raise about your placement

  • Your chance to provide feedback about the Course
    and its administration
  • It will done via pen and paper
  • Karen will email you the form at the end of each
    rotation
  • Please complete it immediately and return it to
    Karen
  • I do not have access to these forms, just the
    results
