What the Exhibit and Defense is NOT

• a time for adults to cruelly torture you with
  impossibly difficult questions that make you feel
  stupid and embarrassed.
• a situation in which you are grilled under a
  blinding light by interrogators who expect you to
  know every detail about the subject you
  researched.
• a 3-hour speech memorized perfectly backwards and
  sideways.

What the Exhibit and Defense IS

• A 20-minute Exhibit and Defense presentation of
  the following
• 1. Introduce yourself (1-3 minutes)
• 2. Overview of research (3-5 minutes)
• Portfolio
• Product display, proof, visual evidence
• Visual aid
• 3. Exhibit and Defense/Q A (5-7 minutes)
• 4. Set up and tear down (3-5 minutes)

Introduction (1-3 minutes)

• Personal introduction suggestions/possibilities
• Name
• Passport, Classes
• Clubs, teams, organizations, honors, awards
• Personal interests, work, volunteer experience
• Family/home, church commitments
• Future Plans
• Transition into why you chose the topic you
  researched

Overview of Research and Product (3-5 minutes)

• Present Visual Aid
• Define/explain the project, presenting a clear
  thesis and main ideas
• What was learned through research
• Information about resources used, interview, etc.
• Conclusions drawn

• Presentation Product (display, proof, pictures,
  etc.)
• Application of research to Product
• What did you learn from the experience
• INTEGRATE audio and/or visual aid and/or product
  into your explanation

Defense

• 5-7 minute Question and Answer period
• Show evidence of reflection
• Demonstrate understanding of topic
• Show clarity of thinking
• Use clear communication skills
• Answer questions thoroughly
• Use clear delivery skills

Product Display

• The purpose of the product display is to display
  your product (obviously)
• If you cannot physically bring in/display your
  actual product you will need to have some sort of
  proof
• Pictures/photo collage/scrapbook
• Video/short film
• Display of copies of letters/surveys/petitions

Visual Aid

• The purpose of the visual is to display your
  research
• It should include the following in a creative,
  professional manner (tri-fold, Power Point,
  etc.)
• Topic/title
• Thesis Statement
• Three/four main points of research
• Some key points of interest (facts/statistics,
  etc.)
• Visual (picture, non-linguistic representation)
