Title: Math Counts With Technology

1
Math Counts With Technology
  • Meredith Pollard
  • Jessica Sarchet
  • Gretchen Slate

2
2nd GradeMath Number Sense
  • 3-day unit integrating technology

3
Overview
  • Technology Integration Plan
  • Standard 1.1 Use keyboards and other common
input and output devices (including adaptive
    devices when necessary) efficiently and
    effectively.
  • Standard 6.1 Use technology resources (e.g.,
    calculators, data collection probes, videos,
    educational software) for problem solving,
    self-directed learning, and extended learning
    activities.

4
Learning Objectives
  • 1. Given concrete models of hundreds, tens, and
ones, students will be able to distinguish
between place values with 90 accuracy.
  • 2. Given number sentences to compare, the student
will be able to use concepts of addition and
subtraction to explain the difference in the
value of numbers with 90 accuracy.
  • 3. Given groups of two numbers, students will be
able to use their strategies of estimation to
solve given problems with 85 accuracy.

5
PASS Skills
  • Stand 2.1.a Use concrete models of hundreds,
tens, and ones to develop the concepts of place
    value.
  • -This will be addressed in objective 1.
  • Standard 2.2.b Represent a number in a variety
of ways (e.g., write the calendar day in
different ways, write 15 as 87, write 25 as 2
tens 5 ones or as 1 ten 15 ones).
  • -This will be addressed in objective 1.

6
PASS Skills Continued
  • Standard 2.2.c Write a number sentence to
compare numbers less than 100 (e.g., 5 is more
    than 2, 3 is less than 7, page 51 comes after 50,
    and 51 is between 50 and 60).
  • -This will be addressed in objective 2.
  • Standard 2.3 Develop and use strategies of
estimation (e.g., compose, decompose, and regroup
numbers, use knowledge of 10 to estimate
quantities and sums two numbers less than 10 can
not add up to more than 20, use body parts to
    estimate measurements.
  • -This will be addressed in objective 3.

7
Integrating Technology
  • Excel-create a gradebook for teacher use. This is
a place for the teacher to record each students
grade from each lesson and tests.
  • Word-After each lesson, have the students write a
reflection using Microsoft Word. Have students
write about what they did and what they learned.
  • PowerPoint-use PowerPoint to create a slide show
    of lessons.
  • Concept Mapping-At the conclusion of our unit,
have the students create a concept map. This can
    be a form of assessment.
  • Imovie-use Imovie to create a video of teacher
teaching a lesson. This is a good resource to
    have for substitutes.

8
Day 1
  • Watch a PowerPoint demonstrating place values.
    Powerpoint slides
  • Play Addition and Subtraction game
  • OVERVIEW A group activity that provides review
and drill in the format of a game for learning
facts in subtraction and addition. Appeals to
    multilevel and multigrade situations. The
Students get so caught up in the game they
consider it an exciting challenge rather than a
    drill or review.
  • Have students do their Word Math Journal
    reflection

9
Day 2
  • Watch I-Movie I-Movie
  • Place Value Game
  • Overview Using this mathematical board for the
early learning of addition allows the students to
visually see the processes taking place.  They
will be able to explore a number of mathematical
    problems.
  • Have students do their Word Journal reflection
  • Student Journal

10
Day 3
  • Estimation Activity
  • Overview allowing students to guess and check on
    various objects.
  • Have students do their Math Journal reflection.
  • Have students create a concept map at the
completion of the unit. Concept map

11
Assessment
  • Using Excel, we created a grade book to assess
the integrated activities (math journals, concept
    map). excel

12
Conclusion
  • Through this integrated unit, it is our hope that
students will benefit from the technology that we
have used. We also hope that the students will
gain a better understanding of number sense and
see the importance that technology has in their
    education.
