  • The strap and associated webbing that anchors the
    top of the child restraint to the vehicle body

Weight limits of tethers by automobile
manufacturer
  • Most vehicles have a weight limit of 40 pounds
  • 48 pounds limit
  • Audi, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep/Eagle, Plymouth, VW
    (except for the Passat and New Beetle)
  • 60-80 pound limit
  • Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Subaru
  • 60 lbs for shell type CR, 80 for harness/vest

LATCH
  • Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children
  • an acronym used in the US to refer to the child
    restraint anchorage system phased in (Sept 02)
    for CR and vehicles under FMVSS 225 and 213.

Lower Anchor Connectors
  • The assembly (connector, adjuster and webbing) on
    a child restraint that connects it to a lower
    anchor in the vehicle, regulated by FMVSS 213
  • More commonly a flexible attachment strap

Lower Attachments
  • Some CSS models will have rigid connection
    systems
  • These connectors are convenient but more
    expensive.

Spacing is 11 inches apart

  • Maximum wt. limits
  • of 48 pounds,

    VW Passat, New Beetle are only to 40 pounds

  • 1000 vehicles who visited clinics that had a
    tether anchor and/or LATCH system and had a child

LATCH Study Results
  • When available, LATCH was used 50 of the time.
  • LA used 58 of the time

Study Results on Installation
  • 20 of participants used SB and LATCH together
  • 10 misuse of tethers
  • 20-30 were installed too loose
  • As far as ease of use most participants preferred
    using LA

  • Vehicle seat from 8 to 15 degrees
  • Seat back from 15 to 20 degree angle
